    That distinctive noise is because the gears are straight cut.
    They allow for less power loss through the transmission and are stronger than the helical (angled/spiraled) cut gears you get in normal gearboxes. Helical are cheaper to make and easier to mesh (and quieter of course), so better for regular cars.
    You might have noticed though in reverse gear a similar whining, because reverse gear is straight cut.

    Good driver alright, but that noise is woeful. Other cars with similar gearboxes don't make as high pitched a whine. He needs to put some oil in it or something.

    Great piece of driving and as Irishrover said straight cut box= lovely noise.:D:D
    Reckon mic in car doesn't do the real sound justice.

    Its the final/diff that whining (pitch relates to road speed). Pretty normal for a race car.
