I was a member of a corps of drums more years ago than I wish to remember.
We won a fair few competitions and were in demand throghout the UK.
I thought we were good until I saw these guys twice in Edinburgh first time impressive went second time hoping that the first had been a fluke performance. Highly disappointed if anything they were even better, came away with the realisation that compared to them we were c***.
    Brilliant performances

Not bad, but they are Guardsmen and like the Queens Colour Squadron RAF Regiment and all other Gaurds Regiments its all they do all day (Before the abuse gets too bad, I'm aware that the Grens, Coldstream, Scots, Irish and Welsh Guards do take the odd break to places like Afgahnistan !!).
So they don't make me feel that bad LOL

    They are all conscripts;)

Each of the rifle companies takes turns in carrying out guard duty at the royal residences in between other duties. The majority of Guardsmen are National Servicemen who are posted to the regiment after their basic training. On arriving at the battalion from basic training, they spend their first five weeks in ceaseless drill practice, hand-to-hand fighting, physical training, close range firing and case solving exercises before they are allowed to perform their first duties outside the royal palace or around the Royal Family's country residence. In addition the guards practice specialized operations within their platoons, and whenever a company becomes the oldest unit within the battalion (longest period of conscription), the company enters service as gardestridsgruppe (guard battle group), GSG, with a 72-hour emergency response time. The mission of the GSG is classified, but it was used during the 22. July attacks on Oslo in 2011.

The mission of the GSG is classified, but it was used [to no discernible effect] during the 22. July attacks on Oslo in 2011 [during which time they got lost and couldn't find a boat etc...]

It doesn't really matter how well-trained your 'special forces' are - if they can't get to the scene of the action they might as well not bother at all.

They are no special forces, only conscripts doing their national service.their duties is to protect the king, and they where used to guard the area around the bombing of the parliament buildings on 22 July.
And save me the smart arse comments, cause you obviously have no idea what you are talking about.
And what has that to do with Edinburgh military tattoo????

These are special forces in Norway.

Sir - it was you, in post #4, who brought to our attention the Norwegians and in post #8, detailed their specialised duties, not me.

I simply pointed out, based on my previous 33 years as a soldier, that no matter how well trained you might be, all that training is of no use unless you are physically on the spot to use it. Your snotty response does you no credit.

    Have a great day.

Its A drill team from Norway on the Military tattoo in Edinburgh.
And the thread is about military tattoo in Edinburgh, you don't need to be genius to figure that one out.
no one said anything about special forces,it was asked if they where conscripts or not.and I used wiki as an example.
So your snotty comments you can save for another thread.
    Have a nice day,Sir.

One of the posts from Long Range stated that they are all conscripts - so the Sergeants (as in those in the Irish, Britiah, USetc), Sergeant Major and officers are all conscripts achieving those ranks within year?
Once more my original comment and second were tongue in cheek and actually was in admiration. Seems to be a sense of humour failure creeping in a bit here.

Sorry,I was just trying to state some facts,no offence.:)
Anyway the Norwegian armed forces have somehow different ranks than most other nations, because they are using conscripts.
