To qualify for Disability Allowance you must:

have an injury, disease or illness, or have a physical or learning disability that has continued or is expected to continue for at least one year and causes you to be 'substantially restricted' in doing work that would otherwise be suitable for a person of your age, experience and qualifications,

My dad worked for 4/5 years after being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes before he retired and so i wouldnt think so,,If the diabetes posed a health and safety risk due to your type of work...who knows, ring and find out is the only way i guess

How does it affect your ability to work as a matter of interest?

The only definite answer is to apply. Has your doctor said your not fit to work?
