Tried searching the entire Film category for 'Once' and got no results. Odd considering the positive response from critics and audiences both this side of the pond and beyond - I was sure there'd be a thread on it!

I, for one, avoided it when it hit Irish cinemas. The whole premise just didn't appeal to me and seeing as it was an Irish production, i'd lost all faith in that in recent times ('Man About Dog', 'Boy Eats Girl' etc.)

But after all the critical acclaim and "Oscar talk", I made myself sit down and watch this evening and absolutely loved it. I wasn't in a particularly good mood but I smiled throughout at the relationship between the two leads, flashes of wit and of course the music was fantastic. Not particularly a fan of The Frames, but this was better - it was just very powerful music which really accompanied the film stupendously. Am setting out to buy the soundtrack tomorrow.

So.. if you were like me and were a bit apprehensive, get over it and rent this. This, along with 'Juno', are probably the two the best films I've seen in the last 6 months.

The Irish Film Industry is back with a bang thanks to John Carney, and the musical talent of Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová. I'm hoping it gets an Oscar nod or two on Monday.

EDIT: Apologies.. just did a search using a wildcard ('Once*') and found this year old thread about it winning at Sundance. Since when did our minimum search term length become 5? Was sure it was 4... definitely was up until recently anyways. Anyways, Karl or ixoy.. feel free to merge with the existing thread.

Really is one of those films that completely fulfills the hype. Glad to see more people discovering it :) But damn you getting to see Juno before release. I haven't been that excited about a film in ages. Two more long weeks...

Yeah, i was truly amazed at how much i enjoyed it. As I started watching it, I was all ready for some pretentious cliché ridden muck but it's impossible not to get caught up in this very sweet film. Am as far from a romantic as you can get but that relationship between the two leads feels so real and genuine that it's impossible not to really enjoy watching it develop on screen.

Gah... why did my search for '*Once*' not find it? Are searches case-sensitive? Goddamn you vBulletin.

Hmm my search showed it up fairly quickly. Just typed in "once" hansard and found it no bother. Always find it easier to use two terms, especially for a wonderfully common word like once ;)

I watched this with the family at Christmas and they all... pretty much hated it! They wanted to know what the point is and I, choking back an irritated reply because of the festive season, labelled them heathens. My Mum, in particular, was adamant about her dislike and couldn't stand Glen's voice or the songs or the lighting in scenes or the point of the movie or.. et cetera, et cetera.

Unfortunately it destroyed the ambience of the movie and rendered it almost impossible for me to enjoy, surrounded by critics. I guess, sometime, I'll have to try and view it again without them..

basquille (and anyone else searching), use google. Go to www.google.ie, click 'advanced search', put in your search phrase, and use the domain boards.ie.

Looks like 7 or 8 threads about the movie....

I searched for once and hansard (just to narrow the criteria)

    http://www.google.ie/search?as_q=once+hansard&hl=en&num=10&btnG=Google+Search&as_epq=&as_oq=&as_eq=&lr=&cr=&as_ft=i&as_filetype=&as_qdr=all&as_occt=any&as_dt=i&as_sitesearch=boards.ie&as_rights=&safe=images

Back on topic, I finally got to see this movie at Christmas. Anyone who was watching it with me at the time loved it. I bought the soundtrack a few months ago, and wasn't crazy about it, but the songs in the context of the movie are fantastic and made me dig up the CD again (and I'm glad I did).

Hope it gets a few oscar nods (and a cinema re-release here).
