I don't know how or why or if I can reproduce it but for the first time ever my Windows machine showed up in 'shared' last night.

Mac is leopard (fully up to date)
Windows is Vista (with all updates applied)

Must give it another look later.

For those who aren't working. Are you sure your Mac and PC are in the same windows workgroup?? If the windows machine is on a Domain you should set the MAC to use the domain name as the workgroup name.

It should then show up in the network browser.

Yeah same workgroup and not part of a domain i can access the windows pc's via ip but wont appear in shared, and i cant access the mac files in windows. i read i have to enable windows file sharing but cant find out to do that?

On tiger here, its System Preferences > Sharing (under Internet & Network) > Then select Windows sharing under services and click Start

In Leopard go to System Preferences/Network/WINS you can enter the Workgroup name there.

To share a folder, select it and press Apple+i (File > Get Info) - near the top of the resulting window will be 2 tick boxes. One is "Shared Folder", tick it if you want to share a folder. You may also need to adjust the permissions at the bottom of this window.

Then go to the Sharing Preferences panel and enable File Sharing, select your folder from the first of the 3 panes to the right and click Options>"Share files and folders using SMB" then tick your name in the list below and enter a password to access the folder.

Sorry a couple of other things. As you've discovered you can enter smb:<ip> and access a share that way, once the share is mounted on your desktop drag its icon down to the dock area near the trash to create a handy quick link to it. If the share doesn't show on your desktop after mounting - click on the desktop somewhere and go Finder > Preferences . . > General > and tick "Connected Servers" or press Apple + ,.
