Dentists treatment of me

    Hi there

I have a few questions that I would really appreciate your opinion on. Suppose the first is related to pain I am getting in my teeth. Since getting a filling over a month ago the teeth near to the filling have been quite sensitive to cold liquids. That was fine and I assumed it would improve in time but in the last few days (2 perhaps) I have been getting terrible agonising pains in my mouth that lasts about 5 mins and then disappear for an hour or so and then i get the pain again. Its agony when it happens. Nerofen plus doesnt seem to work. Its so bad it goes all up my face , my tongue and affects a few teeth in the corner of my mouth top and bottom.

My first question is - has anyone else ever had this sensation where the pain is extremely sharp to the point of where I feel sick and then it just disappears in a few mins and all is ok again.

I hate dentists as I have a fear of them but I managed to get an appointment at one today as the pain was just unbearable. It was in the practice I normally go to but a dentist I have never seen before. Whilst in the waiting room the pain was excrutitating but I had to wait half an hour and by the time I got into the surgery it had subsided completely and didnt even hurt when the dentist blew air on it or tapped it. Anyhow the dentist took a quick look at my mouth and said my gums were fine.

I couldnt tell what tooth was causing the pain as the pain affected a few so didnt know the source. He looked at an old xray that was taken about 4-6 months ago and said that as all my teeth have fillings he couldnt tell which was causing the pain and sent me off to come back when I could pin point the pain. I told him I wont know what tooth it is as the pain is so bad it affects a few teeth. He said that if it was bad enough I d know which tooth. He wasnt very sympathic, didnt take a new xray , looked in my mouth for half a minute and then when I left the girl at reception said they would claim the cost from my prsi (even though I didnt even get a checkup!)

Surely he should have tried to find the source of the pain, even just poking a bit more or that ?

noW im back at home, still getting the pains and cant even go out for food for fear of getting the pains. I couldnt concentrate at work at all today. Was he right to just send me packing ? Anyone know if this is a common complaint. Ive had bad luck with dentists in that practice and they definitely dont like nervous patients like me anyway so will seek a new dentists next week if I still have the pain.

    All suggestions/ideas greatly appreciated.

If your in Dublin try smiles on O'Connell Street very good and very understanding if you have a fear of dentists. You should be able to just drop in if your in pain they open on Saturdays too so you could drop in tommorrow...

He seemed a bit brusque, there's emergency dental clinics that are open on weekends AFAIK. Check golden pages online. There's one off grafton st that I know of. If the pain is so bad that you're afraid to go out for food, you need to get it looked at properly. If you can't get to a dentist, try a GP, they might be able to do something. Hope you feel better OP!

I have felt that pain before op.
A couple of years ago i got a filling and about three weeks later went on hols. to spain. It started then, the pain was unbearable. Nurofin plus, jameson wiskey, tried it all.
I came home and it seemed to be ok for a couple of days and then whack! back it came. The pain now was unreal, I thought my head was going to explode. It was a saterday so i arranged to go to another dentist straight away. He nummed the gum and drilled away at the filling for a while. Lots of pain. He then put another needle into the ex filled area, lots, lots of pain and then proceeded to scrap out nerve endings that my original dentist seemed to forget to do. I was near to passing out.

But, the relief after was unbeliveable. I played a match that day at 2pm and then went on the beer after.

    Sunday,, lots of pain

    Tooth fine though!!!

    Good luck

    Mulan

Are they qualified dentists though? To my knowledge they're not. I would have thought root canal OP, but last poster seems to know what he's talking about!

you need a root canal...exact same thing happened me, blinding pain followed by complete normality, had my head in my hands fir a few minutes then i would ge fine just waiting for the next onslaught...it also leads to phatom pain whereby you cannot tell which tooth is causing it and it starts to feel like all you're teeth are sore (and the dentist should be well aware of this)...think this could have been caused by the dentist not cleaning all of the decay out when doing the filling and so the root is infected...was it a deep filing?

ive had the exact same problem except it went on for about 16 weeks where i missed weeks of work etc due to being incompacitated by pain.
what i discoverd is, like every job there are good dentists and bad dentists and unfortunately most of them are mediocre at best. After going to 4 different dentists I finally got satisfaction and found a damn good dentist.
every dentist I went to did an examination and an xray of my suspect teeth and nothing was seen.
I finally went to the dentist in tyrrlestown dental centre where the dentist there took a comprehensive xray and we both looked at it on his PC and it was now obvious that 3 of my teeth had decayed under fillings and the decay went right to the nerves. I didnt get root canal treatment... each tooth was "dressed" inside. im still in treatment but I have no more pain thankfully.
Im not happy with the dental profession but I did finally find a good dentist.

OP, try Beechwood Dental Clinic in Ranelagh. I don't have a number but google them. They are very professional and are qualified in most/all areas of dentistry.

hey i have definetley felt the pain before. used to get it few years ago. was worse pain i have felt in my life. would be just laughin with my friends or whatever and the pain would come out of nowhere and shoot straight into my tooth. would nearly paralyse my face with pain. was so bad. i let it go on for a long time, cause it wasnt a constant thing, just came and went... used to happen during classes in college..was terrible..neways eventually went to dentist and he said that there was a nerve in my tooth exposed so that was the problem. i was in so much pain, just asked him to pull out the tooth. and it was best decision ever. haha...
id say its sumthing similar to what you have so go get it sorted soon and end the pain.
    good luck with it!! :)

Hey this is the original OP. Went to a different dentist last Monday after a weekend of agony. She was great - did xrays and different tests of the teeth. Had abses, got antibiotics and painkillers and had root canal done later in week and its great now. No more pain. told her i was nervous with dentists and she was grand. Its amazing what a difference a good dentist makes.

OP, glad you were able to get something done for it!

I have a tooth that was moved wrong when I had braces, it was moved 90 degrees and so it was narrow-appearing, they built it up with white filling material to make it look like the other teeth. A few years ago, I got a cavity under the amalgam and had it filled, the sharp pain was gone but I have still got a slight bit of discomfort - not sharp, but constant kind of a sensation.

I went back to the dentist, he said I'd need a root canal. Most of this tooth is amalgam, when i got it filled i needed it put back. I was afraid because the tooth was moved around, taht the dentist's aim at drilling out the root, might be a bit off :( so I looked up an endodontist and went to him out of the blue, no referral, brought no records. He seemed a bit annoyed with me but he said I didn't need a root canal :D

so I'm still in some discomfort, neither here nor there. :/
