I have a bunch of files (100+), each containing around 30 files (mostly mp3 & avi). What i would like to do is extract all files from all folders and put them into a single folder so that I can arrange them alphabetically or chronologically or whatever. Anyone know of an app that can do this for me or am I just going to have to grind it out dragging and dropping

Search for the files (e.g. .mp3 in spotlight) then copy and paste the results to the new folder.

    you can open all folders

then copy and paste usign expose - its faster than searching for an app that probaly doesnt exist

You could script it. What are the container files?

    Thanks for the replies guys
I'm not sure what you mean by container files, its just a heap of folders, mainly compilation mp3 albums, on an external hard drive that I have collected over the years. I just want to put all the songs side by side, delete duplicates and sort by year/genre. I know this can be done in itunes etc. by scanning for files but the problem is, I need to organize them in this way so they are easily accessable in a DJ app. (virtual DJ) which only views files via a browser (it wont import).

Put all the folders in one single folder and search within that folder for ".". ie: anything with a dot in the filename. Then move all found files to one single folder. Double check the size of the 100 folders to see if you have missed a file and then trash the folders.

    alternatively add to itunes

    stops duplicates
can rename them while they are there
    organises them nicely too

What OS are you using? If you're on Leopard, create a custom search and add two fields for filetype (avi and mp3) then save the search to your sidebar in Finder. Job done!

I have custom searches for .doc .fla and .psd files. It allows me to artificially centralise all my files. Good times!
