Great Golf Comp in Kerry

I have decided to run a Golf Competition in Kerry. We have organised 4 days golf at Tralee, Killarney Beaufort and Ballybunion and four nights stay at a top 4* hotel in Tralee (B&B) The competition takes place May 12-15th so weather should be good. Price of entry is 550 per person. 2200 per team of 4. Individual prizes every day and team prizes at end of week.
    www.kerrygolfclassic.com for info.
I am looking for a bit of advice from Golfers - Where do you think is the best place to advertise the competition? Golf Mags or National Newspapers.?
This is the first year running such an event so the budget is tight and we need to make sure it is successful. All comments welcome.

Congratulations Kieran on a great idea. Hope it goes well for you.
Personaly, I think that a good advert in the Examiner and Indo should do the trick. Make sure its in their weekly golf supplements. A lot of these are cropping up and I suppose it was inevitable that Kerry would find one eventually.
I do think that you are pricing it a little steep. I think that you should have another option. The price to play in the event without the accomadation. You will find that there are a lot of people that will have contacts in the region and would rather have the option to stay in B&B's instead.
Also, a lot of Societies are planning weekend breaks away and May is prime time for that. June, july and August are either overly priced and/or clashing with big home Club events eg Captains, Vice- Captains or Presidents Prizes.
Plough on and hopefully this is a success but if its not as huge as you think i can guarantee that it will double the following year if its run correctly. I would nearly commit to the 2009 event sooner than I could commit to this year!!
Also, please try and stop the situation where there are a flood of local entries. This will take away from the holiday atmosphere that an event like you are planning needs to grow.
Just a few comments. Hope it helps.

    Matt,
Thanks for your reply. The cost is as tight as we can make it, the hotel is giving us a great deal but the golf at Tralee, Ballybunion and Killarney is what makes the price up. These are all around 150 to play normally. We are not allowing local entries as you are quite right this spoins the atmosphere. We also want good apres golf and as such would like all the golfers in one place. Every night we have arranged food and entertainment in a local pub / restuarant and prize giving will take place each night as well. Forgot to mention that price includes presentation dinner at end of the week.

How many entries will you need to make it a viable entity for yourselves?
Also, is there an evening meal included with the accomodation?
So I take it there is not an option to play without availing of the accomadation provided?

Matt we need 32 teams to make it viable.
Dinner is provided on the last night only. However we have arranged special menu's and entertainment at 3 local pub restuarants to ensure a good atmosphere on the three other nights.
I suppose we could allow teams to partake without the accomodation package but that would be spoinling the spirit of the event.

No disrespect BUT why have you decided to do this BEFORE researching how you were going to get people to play in it?

An advert in Indo or Exam will be expensive - very expensive - and you'll need more than one.

    VERY good luck.

We have researched how we will promote it, however i see nothing wrong with seeking the opinions of other golfers. You are right the Indo is expensive, examiner not bad. There are a number of Golf magazines out there as well, i would like to know which ones are the most popular with Irish golfers. Would you believe the Tramore event attracts more English teams than Irish!! I would like to turn that around here in Kerry.
Many Irish golfers will not play the likes of these courses due to the costs involved. we are making dreams a reality by providing 4 great days golf at affordable prices.
I guess i am just the sort of person who appreciates the opinions and advice of others - although i may not always act on it!

I never buy Golf Magazines, and only occasionally newspapers.
Much more likely to see this as a flier on the noticeboard in the golf club.
4 games in 4 days would be tough though, especially as they'd likely be slow rounds.
    Good luck.

    Kieran,
Just another few questions for you that will inevitably arise......

    1. Can women play?
    2. Whats the position with further accommodation for spouses that would like to travel and NOT play?
    3. Will part teams be accommodated?
    4. Will Tee Times be assigned to each player before the tournament starts?
    5. Will there be preferential Tee Times if requested? eg Before 9am, between 11 and 12 etc..
    6. Will team members be allowed to compete in the same four ball?
    7. Will there be penalties to players that do not adhere to rules set up by the organising committee?
    8. Will the courses that are being played be marshaled to ensure that the pace of play is maintained?
    9. Will it be a Stableford competition? Any prizes for Gross prizes?

An essential marketing tool is a poster that can be sent to all the affiliated Golf Clubs outlining the Competition, prices, structures and prizes.

I think that it is a great idea that you are putting together so best of luck with it. If I can be of any help PM me and I wll see what I can do for you.
And dont mind the usual negativity that will rear it lazy head on here! I have been posting on here for 12 months now and I have yet to read anything that does not have some form of negativity from one stumped poster in particular!!;)

We'd be glad to offer you a free mention in our News Section on our Golf website whose name you'll find under "the best courses in Ireland" thread.

I'm afraid if I mention its name again the Admin people will cite me for spamming.

anyway PM me if this is any help.

    good luck with the Project.

    Matt
    1. Of course women can play, handicapps are limited to Men 22 ans women 28.
    2. We can provide a quote for non golfers based on accomodation (B&B) only
    3. We will try to accomodate part teams as best we can.
    4. All Tee times will be allocated before the tournament based on preferences.
    5. Yes , as best we can.
    6. No. We will split teams in half 2 & 2.
    7. Normal rules of Golf will apply. Anyone found to be abusing the rules will be struck out from that days scoring.
    8. Yes, course rangers are on all courses. This will be supplemented by the organising team. We are hopeful that rounds should take no more than 4.5 hrs.
    9. Daily stableford competition and team prizes at end of week.
Thank you for lots of sensible questions!

    ratem,
I went on to the site and rated the courses involved. A good site by the way that needs more ratings to be accurate.
    Thanks for your help.

    hi kieran,
    just a few questions.I'm seriously thinking of playing in this. i live in vienna and wil be coming over with some friends.before i commit to bookin flights a couple of questions if you don't mind;
is it dependent on you getting a minimum amount of teams or is it going ahead no matter what?
we have a friend who is a teaching pro here.could he play off scratch?
    is the hotel in killarney?
btw i think it's a super idea and choice of courses are excellent.

We need a certain amount of teams to take part for the competition to go ahead but we are confident iof achieving this.
Your friend who is a teaching pro could play off scratch.
The hotel is in Tralee. The location is the most central one for all ythe courses. See web site www.kerrygolfclassic for details on courses and hotel.

Ok, seeing as none of the other lads will ask, I will.... Well, what's she look like?? :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 47 krutt

Yes i would like to know that as well! Must be a handy golfer though playing of 16 and she says she should be better than this!
Always an advantage to have a woman in the team IMO as often they get huge advantages on some of the tougher courses.

Carlsberg have now come on board as sponsors of the event. So there should be a few free pints flowing around the place as well.

oh yeah another question.is it ballybunion old we're playing?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 47 krutt

    Bruno,
We are looking okay but not there yet with sufficient entries. Entries are trickling in rather than flooding. I am quite suprised because we have put 4 great courses together and a top hotel so its really great value. If you were to play these courses at normal green fees it would costs 520 euro. We are doing the full 4 days for 550.
Look at the web site www.kerrygolfclassic.com for details on each of the courses. You will see that its Ballybunion Cashen course.
Hopefully you will hear from me shortly so you can book the flights
    All the best!

Nige1982, all Golf clubs have been sent posters about the event. It should be up on your local golf clubs notice board if they bothered to put it up. Anyone looking for more info can find it on the web site www.kerrygolfclassic.com
We are looking forward to a few great days golf in May.
Have a great trip to USA.

Fair play to you this looks like it'll be a great event.
I just have 2 questions for you.
What's your defintion of local? I'm from Kerry and would like to play and know others who would also play.
With regard to the club pro, playing off scratch, if he's not a professional then surely he has a handicap and why cant he just bring proof?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 47 krutt

A local would be a member of one of the clubs.
If a guy is a pro, some are actually a minus figure. Anyway as it turned out he is not playing. Nearly all players are mid handicaps.
Give me a shout if you are interested in playing as i have a number of options krutt@indigo.ie

    David,
I suppose you could enter up to the day before the comp starts, however i would prefer as much notice as possible. As you are a local will you require accommodation? If so i need to know probably 3 -4 days before event starts.
Look forward to hearing from you
