23,000 British car write-offs on Irish roads

How many are Cat D though? Many Cat D writeoffs would be repairable economically if it wasn't for the associated costs of repairing them, such as providing a hire car for the driver. On certain vehicles they become significantly more repairable here due to the higher value...

Also, that car in your example isn't one of them as its not be re-registered yet :p

HPI. You'd be stupid not to. Unlike Cartell they also offer a warranty against clocking.

Stuff like this irks me TBH. Write-Off is a financial term and has no bearing on the safety of the car whatsoever.

Its always good to know what you are dealing with though. It just bugs me that people hear "write off" and think of something mangled by an artic when it possibly hit a poodle and it damaged the front of the car!

Something to think about. Cartell.ie are responsible for this report.
It’s in their interest to make people concerned about the possibility of importing a lemon or potentially dangerous car. Promotes the use of their service.
Prices are such a (relative) rip-off in Ireland that people are going to keep going to the UK to buy, even if cartell.ie publish stuff like this, which they well know.
Always got to ask the why….

    Just an ad for Cartell.

Tbh, if we can't get our own NCT to work with mileage recording, then there isn't a chance of the write-off thing happening.

As I mentioned in the other thread, HPI is not infallible. As it says on the HPI site:

"HPI is part of Norwich Union, the UK's largest insurer. Norwich Union is part of Aviva, the world's sixth largest insurance group."

Which means, they are a vested interest............

btw, do a google for: not recorded salvage cars on google.co.uk, and you'll see what I mean.....

    e.g. This car....

    Ode To The Motorist

“And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, generates funds to the exchequer. You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

    Nothing wrong with this.

All you have to do is open your local phonebook and look for panelbeaters. They're not all fitting spoilers. Cars having bashes is a fact of life.

I don't see the vested interest. To call HPI and get a data check done costs STG£40. An expensive phone call. They are there to make profit. In turn the customer gets a valauble data report.

Yes I agree the HPI isn't infallible. Remember though it's a data check, and not a promise of zero accident damage, recorded or not.

It's vital to get a proper mechanical once over done in addition to a HPI check.

Also remeber HPI, unlike Cartell, offer a warranty against incorrect mileage readings. STG£10k I think.

Cat D cars, even if expertly repaired, will never be worth the same money as a undamaged car.

the hpi warrenty doesnt cover cars being imported to ireland i have used the hpi check before and when i asked about the warrenty i was told it does not cover cars taken out of the uk so anyone using it ask about it first they could of changed as it was a year ago since i did it

as i have said in my post its what i was told when i was on the phone to hpi i did speak to a team leader and manager in hpi to confirm that was the case and they said it was so my advice from my own dealings with them is to ask them while doing a hpi check
