Cork train is the same, pick it up every now and again in Heuston

Its used by the train to download stuff from the IE booking system when it is in a station, its not connected to anything

Its a 104bit WEP key SSID is CIE, if it was wifi for punters it wouldn't use WEP

3G is now cheap and way more flexible

As stated above, this is only for the seat reservations system.

IÉ are working on installing the next generation of wifi on all of the new trains rather than existing technology, so it won't be available for a while yet.

This is just a BS excuse by CIE to do absolutely nothing.

    What next generation Wifi technology?

Do you mean 802.11N or WiMax, which there is only one operator of in Ireland with only very small coverage and for which almost no one has support for in their laptops.

As goingnowhere says, don't hold your breath waiting for CIE, just use one of the mobile phone operators HSDPA services instead.

How does the 3G Hspda broadband thing work on trains? moving at that speed like does it make a difference?

The French TGV's use a mixture of satellite and wifi relays for their new broadband service on the new TGV Est line (Paris - Strasbourg and Germany)

Having spoken to someone who was using the phone link up (on the Galway line from Heuston), the speed is like dial-up at best, and only in or around stations. Beyond Maynooth, I believe the coverage is sketchy and thus may or may not be all that good, so any sort of WiFi link would be picked up.

As for it being provided by a little used operator: it'll be a niche market, and people will subscribe to the operator to get said WiFi.

I'm also interested in this question. The whole issue is with overcoming/compensating for the Doppler effect and ensuring quick handovers between base stations. I did some quick Googling and came up with these:
3G UMTS RailLink Offers High-Speed Wireless Broadband in Trains
3G and HSDPA Internet Access On A High Speed Train
Virgin Trains speeds towards on-board 3G mobile network
Say Goodbye to WCDMA Coverage Problem in High-Speed Environment

So, it seems to be possible, but it also seems that some form of co-operation between the 3G operators and Irish Rail may be necessary for it to work properly. Of course, 3G broadband coverage would be a big issue.
Looking at Vodafone's 3G internet offers, it seems very good value for anybody who really needs broadband on the move. Basically, we need somebody who uses Vodafone's broadband to give us a review of whether or not it works on trains.
