    Hi,

My mam just got an '02 Polo and fair enough it'd only be about 250 euro for her to get insured on her own. But add me in there and it shoots up to 2,600!!
I suppose there is the fact that I'm only 20 and on a provisional with no experience... :o

But the AA refused to insure me at all because I was too young!!

Do you know if we could get a better deal than that anywhere? Anyone been in similar situation?

Quinn Direct would be your only option sadly :(

If your going to be the only one using the car it will be cheaper to put it in your name and for her to go on your policy. That way if you have an accident it wont wreck her no claims bonus

Try Quinn, they are one of the cheapest for first time drivers. And you can get a quote online here:
    https://www.quinn-secure.com/QMP/publicviewquestions.do?productcode=QMP

Brittons are good for first time drivers too:

Let us know if they were any cheaper.

    2,600 was Quinn.

This is for insuring my mam, and then myself as the second driver.

Just tried britton and they quoted 3100!!!!!!

I suppose I probably would be driving it more... I'll try it the other way round and see what the results turn out like...

When I started driving about 3 and a half years ago I was in a similar situation. I was 18, male, provisional and no driving experience. I was quoted €3500 to be added to my moms insurance policy on a 1.4 Megane on a 3rd party basis.

So what I did was I bought a commercial Pajero and got a fully comp policy in my uncle's farm name for €2250 on a 2.8 Pajero. I still have the jeep and now its insured in a private policy uner my own name. And my insurance has dropped to €1100 fully comp in my name(21,full licience).

I dont know if you'd be able to try the commercial route, it is a pain having no rear seats, but other than that as craichoe said, Quinn would be your best bet.

Is there any difficulty insuring a van privately without using it for commercial reasons?

No, not really. The only problem that I have is finding someone to insure it privately. Quinn and FBD are the only ones that I could find, I know that they both insure commercial jeeps privately so I assume that they'd do carvans like focus/corolla too. But I'd say that if you tried to insure a transit or something like that privately they wouldn't do that, but I could be wrong.
