Are rear projection TVs any good?

If this is totally in the wrong place then please feel free to move but basically I was looking for some advice on rear projection TVs. I originally was gonna buy a 32" LCD tv for the living room in the apartment I have just moved into with two other guys. There is crap TV there but I wanted to buy a decent one. I thought I would check out the 2nd hand market firstly and I have seen some keenly priced rear projection TVs. I was just wondering, are they keenly priced because they are crap or is it because everyone is upgrading to an LCD tv.

I should also add that there will be a fair bit of gaming done through the TV in case that's of any relevance.

Moved to HE Video Displays & Projectors You'll get more responses here. Have a search of the board too and you will find some info.

RPTV's are fine, depends on what your criteria are really. Try some out and see what you think. They are keenly prices because they are cheaper to make, They dont quite off the contrast or colour of an LCD/plasma but for the price its a decent trade off

My in laws recently bought 1 of the Sony 55" ones and they get great reviews.
I have to say that I'm not a big fan.
If you are sitting pretty straight on and there's no background light then they're great, but during the day I think its muck tbh.
In fairness their room is one of the brighter rooms you would get but still, they have a 40" Samsung in the ajoining room which they end up watching most of the time because of it.

All depends on what you want and where you put it really.
