Curious to see how many people have out there as I'm looking to buy another because I need to start rotating my suits.
    Thanks.

Not enough to rotate every day, but I have a policy of only buying expensive suits.

I think it's better to own one or two decent suits (designer) than a few cheap (high street) suits...

None at all. I have my christenings/weddings/funerals suit and that's it. I hate the things with a passion.

imo i would only pay big money to look flash for special occasions. for work high street is where its at. The jacket last 5mins and then gets taken off in the office. The money should be spent on decent shirts and ties.;)

I have 2 good suits and 2 normal suits(High Street)

+1 on the shirts & ties, this is where the money should go.

I think the material in cheap suits looks cheap though.

I just don't think cheap suits look right.

It's worth the couple extra hundred IMO...

2 suits, €500 each, cant remember what label they are but they are good quality suits from a proper suit shop. The M & S ones are crappy.

I have 5 suits, 3 that I shelled out on and a couple of high streets. I'd recommend paying a couple of extra bucks for a decent suit. The cut is always better and alot more comfortable.

Stop into Diffneys, got a few from there and the staff seem to know what they are talking about and are helpful.

When you say cheap im not sure what you mean? If you buy a cheap looking suit it will look "Cheap Looking". Its so easy to buy quality suits anywhere on the high street at reasonable prices. By high street i dont mean large chain stores smaller Mens Suit Stores around Stephens Green and the likes do quality stuff. My Point is that i dont see the need in paying for "BT" suits if it gets chucked over the back of a chair and all people see of you is the quality shirt and tie that you layed out for:)

Well when you start wearing expensive suits you can really tell the difference between a BT type suit and a high street suit.

It's the material and the cut.

Also, people who wear expensive suits tend to go for the whole package: nice shirt, tie, and leather soled shoes.

When I was younger (early 20's) I used to wear the high street stuff. I then decided to try out the expensive stuff. There really is a massive difference. I look one million times better in the fancy suit, and as a result I feel better which again makes me look even better...

Something to think about: women notice the clothes you wear!

I have just the one, and it only sees light of day for funerals, weddings and interviews.
I'd hate to have a job that required me to wear a suit every day

I used to be the same, but you get used to it!

If you were to buy a made-to-measure suit tomorrow, where do you think is good in terms of quality, style then price?

I like Hugo Boss suits. They look great and they're not too expensive (~€600)

I never need to wear a suit for work purposes so I just have one decent quality suit for occasional formal events.

I don't wear a suit to work so the poll isn't really relevant but one thing that bugs me is the amount of (mainly younger) men who can't tie a proper knot in their neck tie. A well cut suit looks crap if the tie isn't done correctly.

Ah but you are in Ireland now where people will pay twice as much for something if its obvious to others that they spent a lot of money on it .i.e. has designer label.
Most of my suits are made by tailor, they fit perfectly, are good quality and cost half as much as Tommy Hil etc. I see so many junior/middle management guys at work wearing €1000 suits that look sh!te on them, they have no sense of taste but think that if something is expensive, its must be good.

Suits are a status symbol though; it's relevant that they are expensive.

As you say yourself, the guys who are in management all wear expensive suits. It's not a coincidence that well dressed (or at least, expensively dressed) people make it to management level.

Regarding your designer label comment: I would never tell people what kind of suit I am wearing. I am interested in clothes which make me look and feel better.

In the other hand this is not the suit that makes a man. It is the man's actions.
A suit makes him look nice and eventually professional that's it.

Americans have proven us that wearing a suit everyday is not what is going to make you a billionaire.

But some professions requires to wear a suit every day and we deal with it :-)

I own the one suit. Only used at weddings, funerals or interviews. Gotta suck the belly in to put it on, so meh, may need a new one, but meh :/

Spent about €300 or €400 on it, maybe 3 or 4 years ago. It was a jacket, shirt and trousers, etc, but I've had to change the shirt a few times, as the neck would go after a while.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,276 ✭✭✭damnyanks

4 "designer" mainly its the shirts and ties you need. I've about 15 shirts and 10 ties

Two suits for me, both from Louis Copeland. One for funerals & interviews, the other for weddings & days at the races. The You can really tell the difference in quality between a suit from a tailor (even though both of mine are off-the peg) & a high-street suit.

When I bought the suits it was with the intention that they would last me a long time & thankfully my waist measurement hasn't changed since. I paid a few bob for them - £1k for one (& that was at half price in a sale) & £500 for the other. But they are both cut in a classic style that will not go out of fashion. They are hard-wearing & still look as good as they did 6 years ago when I bought them.

Anyone else care to share their experiences?

i have over 10 suits. i think about 4 of them are Hugo Boss, while the others are M&S.
I enjoy wearing a suit. I can also remember a time when I thought that wearing a suit was a big no no, but as you get on in life, and go up the corperate food chain, your appearance becomes important.
Besides, I feel good when I wear a good suit thats cut right.

As for the shirt and tie thing, absolutely! If you are wearing a cheaper suit, then a really nice shirt and tie will set it off and be focused on a lot more than the suit.

Cheap suits are an absolute no no. Cheap suits look cheap and feel cheap. Feeling and looking cheap will do nothing for you, in your own eyes or anyone elses tbh.

Also own a dress suit, a chinese waiter suit (grandfather collar as opposed to the usual lapels), a really nice linen summer suit that looks great with a white cotton grandfather shirt, and for some strange reason, a set of tails.

of course, when im at home, i wear trackie bottoms and an old football shirt or something, so its nice to leave the house in a good suit and feel confident and professional for work.

Besides, like zztop said, chicks really dig a sharp dressed man :)

Any decent mens suit shop that has a sale on :)

I bought all mine in London though.

I'm ashamed to say that I own four cheap M&S suits. I had to purchase them after christmas as I'm currently interviewing for work in financial services.

If I get the job, I'll make a plan to pick up a few Hugo Boss ones!

I posted a few days ago, I had 2 suits, I now have 4, got them in Best and they were on sale too, €1000 worth of suits to €400 can't argue with that
