It would be hard to overstate the usefulness of this for both piano players and students of all levels of musical theory.

    A Jazz Improvisation Primer by Marc Sabatella. Information on almost every topic relating to jazz improvisation, from jazz history to music theory to practical advice on playing in a group. Not too much heavy theory but well worth a read for intermediate musicians onward.
