Hey up, I'm looking for info. on where/how one can go about getting pub gigs in Dublin. I have 5 years or so of pub gig experience in West Cork and I'm looking to get some music up in Dublin to make ends meet. Is there promoters around or is a case of going pub to pub? Its a mix of trad/rock/pop fair that I do. Sound.

    Hello there Man in Brown,

    I hope you're well.

First off, not to get your hopes up, I'm afraid I've no real idea how to get gigs in Dublin.

It's exactly what I've wanted to do myself, though, for about the last 7 years. I never quite mustered up the nerve to try. I play acoustic guitar & sing - mostly Irish Ballad/Rock (soft& melodic, rather than screaming..., which I admire, but can't do) and anything acoustic and tuneful.

I do know that the "norm" in securing a gig is just to wander into one of the many, many Temple Bar type pubs and ask to speak to the manager. Offer to do an AFTERNOON gig for free, for them to check you out. (You can send in/hand in a CD, but it's cheaper and more accurate all round if you just show them what you'll be doing).

There are easily enough "slots" (for want of a more casual word) in pubs in the afternoons and evenings - on either weekdays or weekends - for you to find a niche.

And with 5 years experience playing around West Cork, I'd say you're probably much more accomplished than many already plying their trade in the City Centre.

Anyway, the best of luck with it, and if you discover anything new to the above, you might let me know. And, if you ever need some support, drop a line.

    The very best of luck,

    Bren

Do not offer yourself free, you'll never get in the door. A "discount rate" for first time bookings is ok and a very normal part of negotiation with bar owners.

When you're a solo act there should be plenty of doors open to you, contact some agents working the scene and just let them know you're looking for work, you never know when you might get an unexpected phone call. The best way to secure gigs is to just approach pubs yourself and just leave a business card. There is a rake of work for solo acts and duos in the big shmoke, you just have to be pro-active.
