Finished COD4, disappointed

Well I finished COD4 last night and was very disappointed with the ending. Obviously I'm not going to spoil the ending but I felt the game was too short on the whole.

That said, it's still an amazing game, utterly unbelievable and there's plenty of life left in it thanks to Arcade mode and online playing :)

Lots of new games are fairly short compared to a few years ago, Unchartered for example. An excellent game IMO but a bit short. Online features in games give them very long lifetimes. COD4 has to be one of the best online games I have played.

All true. :) However, I was very satisfied with the ending of Resistance: Fall of Man, perhaps because of the way the cut-scene stories were told and unfolded. I was expecting the ending. With COD4, it was unexpected for me anyway.

The Main game story last a couple of hours, but ive clocked up over 40+ hours on the online part!

I heard drakes is short but has not much replay value...

Lookin forward to MGS4, were the ending will be no doubt a full length movie of sorts...

I've been playing it online and offline and find that I do enjoy online but the single player game is strangely unsatisfying. The graphics are terrific, its true but the actual game itself is pretty basic.... nothing that hasnt been done a good few times before. Now, admittedly I have only played about 6 of the levels... but they feel almost like I'm on rails being brought to somewhere, the game waits until I do X and then urges me to walk on to the next set piece. Each is fine but I often feel like a spare wheel in the game rather then a key player...

The single player of cod4 is appalling IMO. It palys like any linear, scripted shooter of the last 7 years. Its overrated to the point of nausea. The MP i didnt get into at all so i cant comment on it but the single player is terrible. The enemy AI relies on infinte respawns and grenade spamming, and the levels are so linear and without freedom to explore or improvise that it hurts. People slag off halo 3 but for my money, halo 3 gives you the guns and vehicles and says 'play me however you want, use a vehicle, go where you like, its an open battlefield' whereas cod 4 just gives you the guns and says 'follow this path and dont deviate or the ai will nade spam you to death'

I quite enjoyed it, but it annoyed me the way your super trained dealer of death was incapable of opening doors. They obviously didn't bother to train you to do this before they sent you into Russia to take out terrorists!

    EDIT: ^^^ Very true :D

Ha ha, yes I did find that in many sections of the map, when you had killed the enemy, you weren't free to explore, instead the voice of your comrades keep urging you forward. I guess it's trying to emulate the fact that in real war you have a section leader who tells you what to do?

Either way, some of the missions were amazing but again, when I realised that what I was seeing was the game credits rolling instead of another cut-scene I was shocked, it was a real "WTF?!" moment. The build up to "The End" wasn't there for me.

Of course for anyone who hasn't plaed online I would encourage it, there are plenty of challenges and experience points unlock new weapons, attachments and creating your own class can be fun :) Not to mention the different types of online play!

I'd definitely like to see more freedom in the game because while the graphics are incredible there is definitely room for gameplay improvement.

Great production values but it is so linear and infinite re-spawn enemies drives me bonkers. I was playing it on veteran and haven't gone back to it as its just so so linear

Playing it on veteran does make the game a lot longer

The only point I can agree with in this thread is that the SP game is too short. Other than that, I disagree with most of the points being made here.

    1. The game is less linear than Halo 3. I played through Halo 3 about 4 times before I had to give it away [to my nephew, li'l b*stard!]. It did not deviate at all. In COD4, as the story is integral to the SP campaign, the game needs to be relatively linear. But, in sections, like The Bog, the sniper mission, the assault on the control room, the maps are massive and allow you to approach from a number of areas. The difference between the two is that while COD4s maps are diverse with cover and buildings to move through, back alleys and rooftops, Halo 3 has a number of large areas with one entry and one exit.

    2. The enemy AI is actually quite good. Compared to games that seem to think that if you are the enemy, you don't have access to grenades, RPGs and such, as it makes the game too difficult. At least there is some realism in that respect in COD4.

    3. I cannot understand how people didn't see the end coming. I mean
we had already averted the climatic missle strike threat and then had a showdown with the baldie Russian dude, who we knew was the only guy left to kill from that photo they showed. If anything, the extra plane level was more of a shock!

    That's my two cents anyway...

The way I see it is that the single player game is an extended training mission for the real battle, i.e. online. Bloody fantastic sessions online have me hooked - except of course when the server is populated by annoying yank kids who think they're big men calling each other "gay" "queer" etc and thats when they're being nice to one another!!! Pity you can't turn off voice chats in those instances. Fun killing them though:D:D

Interesting viewpoint! I must admit that the online sessions have me hooked as well. Also, I haven't yet come across any moronic headset warriors yet. The worst I had was an English kid who was obviously shouting downstairs to his mother "Yeah Mum, I'm doing my Maths homework, it's fractions and they're okay!" :) Brought back memories of my own surreptitious attempts to play Commodore 64 games when I was supposed to be doing my homework :)

Can i ask what difficulty you played the game on, this game was so scripted and linear it was painful.

The level where you attack the radio/television station was tough on veteran. Once you enter the doorway to a big conference room and take 4 steps the enemy just appear through the doors.

If you stand outside the room there are no enemies beyond the doors (chuck grenades, fire shots to try and lure them out etc) and yet they suddenly appear when you walk a few feet in. That's bollocks and ruins any sense of immersion not to mention it being crazily frustrating.

I lost count of how many times on a level when you reach a certain point a scripted event takes place.

Some scripting in games is necessary of course but CoD4 goes way way overboard with it.

How you can call the sniping level non linear is beyond me. McMillan tells you what to do every single step of the way. Follow me now, shoot that guard, lift me up, drop me down here, go into that building. If you deviate slightly or mess up on the hardest difficulty you are dead in seconds.

Its the scripting that makes CoD4 feel very linear and ruins the SP for me, online it is wonderful (bar under powered sniping weapons)

Played through on Normal first, then Hardened and now going through Arcade mode before Veteran.

I never really liked that part either but my point is there are a multitude of ways to complete it.

    1. Claymore the door and pick them off, ona at a time.
    2. Run to the other side of the room and use the empty doorway as an area to pick off the guys in the balcony.
    3. Use the room opposite the door to move from room to room to avoid nades...

Yes the sniping mission is linear, it has to be with regards to story [you, a rookie, being led by an experienced CO to a designated area] but it is not very restrictive. I was able to deviate a lot from the path. A number of times, I disregarded his orders and opened fire on the enemy. Instead of some sort of mission failed message, I just got to try and survive for a while. Not an issue with the game but rather my sh!te aim!

    Jebus,
So there is another guy out there as old as me (if you had a commodore 64 - then you're old!!!:D). I recently saw a you tube video of "rescue on fractalus" and that was cutting edge at the time. Oh the kids nowadays don't know what they have to appreciate with ps3's and the like. They also never had to sit through the old ping pong tv games with the 2 bats knocking a ball back and forward bing - bong. Old fart rant over;)

No problem with you being a 360 owner - you'll just get a lot of sympathy what with all the hardware failures:D:D:D

I'm what you'd call an original COD player, i.e. I bought it went it first came out on the pc. I spent hours playing COD and UO online - brilliant fun. Was disappointed with COD 2 + 3 to be honest but COD 4 beats the lot of them together. The single player missions are fun on the first run through but not too much replayability I'm afraid, but this game beats all with the online play. Nothing short of fantastic. Some people bemoan the lack of vehicles but I think this is a plus as in UO, it was annoying when some noob parked himself in a tank and picked off infantry at long range. COD 4 is hand to hand in most places and the best player wins. Buy it, you will not be disappointed - providing you play it online of course!
