    Hi,

A group of us are travelling to Morocco in March and will be staying in Marrakech for 5 nights and Essaouira for 3 nights. Has anyone been to either/both and if so what do you recommend to do/not do?

    Thanks

I'm going to Morocco in March too!

I was in Essaouira once just for a few hours. It is a really pleasant place with loads of windy shopping streets - sort of a Moroccan version of Galway I suppose (I'm talking souvenir shops and the like now rather than high street shops). The seafood stalls looked very interesting, but I'm not into seafood at all. It's supposed to be a great place for surfing. To me it seemed more tourist oriented than Marrakech though I can't imagine it gets near as many foreign tourists.

My most interesting story about Essaouira is that there were loads of 8-10 year old boys going around selling little packets of tissues. It seemed strange but then the restaurant we went to didn't give us serviettes. Anyway, we witnessed a few of these boys 'mugging' each other for their tissues - I think it may only have been half serious, but it was pretty weird to watch!

In Marrakech, Djemaa El Fna is brilliant. Keep your eyes open or you could end up with a woman trying to put a henna tattoo on your arm without you realising or someone might put a monkey on your shoulder for a photograph even if you say your not interested! That said, there's a great buzz to be got from talking to these people. My advice would be to get involved and enjoy it, looking in from a distance isn't near as much fun. But be aware that people will use any opportunity to look for money from you. So, for example, if you're watching the musicians for a few minutes they may demand money from you.

The Jardin Majorelle is really nice. I think it's well worth a visit, but it's just a garden so don't expect too much excitement.

Driving in the medina (the older walled part of the city) is fairly stressful and parking is hard to find. Parking anywhere in Marrakesh will result in someone assisting and then looking for money.

The newer part of the city outside the city walls is much more sane and 'European' than the older part of the city.
