    Getting an american driving licence on a J1
    Well, title says it really. I am going on a J1 to NY in May. Hope to do a bit of driving there so i was wondering is it possible to get an american driving licence there? I already have a full irish one, its just that the american one might be handy from time to time...

    If you have a full Irish one you don't need an American one. Have a look here

    If you really want one for whatever reason you'll find what you need on that site.

    Walshey, you never took me for a spin when i came to visit;).

    Classman, I hope you don't intend to drive in Manhattan itself, its absolutely crazy, if you do rent a car make sure it has a good loud horn, you'll be using it quite a bit and don't worry about indicating, its not important over there:D

    i was thinking of doing a bit of driving in the US when i go on the J1 this summer.

    So i need to get an international driving permit before i go over??

    With the J1 you can get a US drivers license as long as you show up at the DMV with your Social Security Number, VISA and proof of address. You have to do a theory test just like over here to get your permit which will allow you to drive with a licensed driver. Then it is up to you to do the test. I got my permit, took a few lessons and did my test all within a week so it can be really easy to get it.

    Watch out when renting a car as a lot of companies hike up the prices for U25

    Cudnt u just get an international drivers permit issued by the AA?only takes a few days and lasts a year...if u really wanted to.

    if you're with a few lads buy a cheap car if you plan on driving outside NYC. Will probably work out cheaper than renting. But you'll be grand on public transport if you were just looking to drive around the city.
