Yes I always leave UV filters on my lenses to protect them.

    I don't actually do that.

I simply always leave the lens hood on when shooting - hope i'm not tempting fate but i haven't had any problems thus far. Although it isn't unheard of (I can't remember where but perhaps here), I have seen people praising filters as lens protection - one particularly vivid in my mind shows a scene of a lens with a cracked filter on the end of it, but the writer reassured the reader that all was fine with the actual lens. I guess you'll always run the risk.

yep, I always leave the filter on, irrespective of using the hood or not.

I had a decent-enough-or-so-I-thought Hoya UV filter on my Sigma 70-300 and I found I got much better image quality without it :/

Filter on when I'm shooting in hazardous conditions e.g. sea spray, waterfall, sandstorm.

Filter off when I'm shooting at night, or in normal situations.

Lens hood on all the time.

    Sounds sensible to me.
