    Hi guys,

I have just bought a 05 M3 which has the BMW TV \ SAT Nav Unit onboard. I know that some feel it is a very stupid thing to do but was wondering what is involved in getting the system updated to allowmthe TV to be viewed while the car is moving etc.

    Thanks in advance

    Mark.

It could be (and probably is) a completely different system on a BMW factory TV unit but maybe not...

On a dvd player headunit (like what u'd buy in halfords), you sort this out buy joining a wire that is supposed to be connected to the handbrake switch up to the earth wire for the headunit (still earth it as normal though).

Very simple. but as I said it might not be the way things work with yours as its obviously a completely different animal. If you have the tools for removing the unit you should whip it out and have a look at the wires on the back... Just dont snip anything til an expert tells u though!:D

Surely the answer will be readily available on a BMW forum somewhere?

On the Audi system, it requires disconnection of the speed input signal. This, however, will affect both speed-dependent volume adjustment and navigation. Some people fit a switch, to allow them to choose when to disconnect the signal. The BMW system may, of course, be different. Either way, you're right - as modifications go, it's one step up from furry dice.:)

You need to HaX0r it. I did it for my car. As the bible says, do your research and you'll have your solution ;)

I can do it with my BMW Scanner diag. If you asked last week and were in Galway I could have offered to do it for a bottle of Buckfast but i'm back trying to be educated for a few weeks. If you're still stuck at the end of March and are around Galway i'll do it for a bottle of buckie :D

I also have Carsoft but this will only read/reset fault codes, give some live data etc.... not half as good as BMW Scanner. Only pain in the hole about Carsoft is all results are in HEX, you need to manually convert which is a bit of a slow process... i'm not a geek like :p

You need to fit a bypass cable such as this. They're pricey but pop up on ebay from time to time. I have one in my M3, was put in by the previous owner and tbh i never use it on the move. Reception isn't great tbh when the car is moving.

Congrats on the purchase btw, fantastic car !

I vaguely remember reading an add in a UK car mag a few years ago about a company offering this service. As far as I can remember its connected to the handbrake so the TV can only work when the handbrake is pulled up, I think that its just a matter of loosing that connection.

None of that physical stuff in my BMW. It's a matter of using the software "back door". In my case a quite precise timing of pressing an array of buttons on the TV while the ignition key was in different positions. It worked!

as JHMEG said, do your research in the relevant car specific forums and you'll find it

The TV tuner needs to be reprogrammed.
If somebody can do it here, would be nice for him.
Or you can take your module out and send it in UK.

But keep in mind the reception while moving is going to be crap.

    Guys,

thanks a mill for all the replies - very helpful. I will try some of the above and see how I get on. Was interested in seeing what was involved.

My big prob now is trying to keep petrol in the thing and thats easier said than done!!!

Saw a new S5 today and I turned green with envy!

pfft I spent ages in my 00 528i trying to get that button pressing to work, where you hold the button down on the contrast or something and swith the ignition. Couldn't manage it... may try again but was a pita

It worked for me first attempt. I was probably just lucky though :)
