Hey, Im 5'9 135lbs and I want a punchbag. My punches are pretty weak so i was wondering what weight bag should I get and what is a good brand? Also, should I get one that hangs from the ceiling?

Should I hit this bag with my bare hands, hand wraps or full gloves?

Never punch a bag with your bare hands, get mitts. Dowlings in Terenure have good bags.

Terenure isn't an option for me.

How about Elverey's, Argos or an online site?

By mitts do you mean gloves like boxers wear at fights? If so what weight and brand?

Try JJB sports in Blanch. They have a lot of stuff, including mitts and spar
gloves etc etc and the prices are very reasonable. Good quality stuff as well.
Also, they sell hand wraps for protection. I would advise you wrap the hands
    well when doing bag work...

mitts are alot lighter and looser than fight gloves.

    Go online !
    much cheaper, i Use http://store.titleboxing.com/punching-bags.html
it comes from Usa , so you got to pay customs, but its still a lot cheaper and the quality is so much better than the muck some irish shops offer.

With the price of the american dollar at the moment , it all works out quite cheap.
customs is paid as cash on delivery, at your hall door.

Best o' luck with your bag , and yeah , use protection on your hands.
As Frazier says, look after your hands and they will look after you.

I got one in elverys in blanch about 2 years ago and its holding up well, and i bash the sh*t out of it with shoes on (i kick it) and it has nt wripped or anything.

But i think ive out grown it now. Its not a bad idea.

    All the best.

Although the ones they had on display were crap so the manager let me in the stock room to find a good one, it was stuffed.

    How much did it weigh?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 754 ✭✭✭ryoishin

Not sure, its heavy enough but most of the weight sinks to the lower half when its hanging. but i was told that when your not using it rest it upside down so theres not too much stress on the lower half all the time. I use it to squat with and lift and stuff aswell. its 5 foot.

these dudes deliver free in ROIreland , that angle bag is very good value @ 70brick.

its one to consider,.... and returns are sent back to galway , so they must be based over herre which is slightly more encouraging when buying online.

That bag doesn't look too bad, it doesn't say what it weighs though.

K, I'll get the rival ones for 30 euro so.

I saw wraps as well, 5 euro for 108 inches. Is 108 inches too short? It said to get 180 inches on how-to-box.com

Did you ever get that bag up or neigh ?

The heavier ones are not to my liking ,.. for me its like hitting an un-movable object !!!
the semi-heavy bags are nice to swing-push-and move around ,.... and still heavy enough to "dig" in deep !

    gidde-up !

Looked at a leather adidas bag today for 150 euro. 4ft tall. The guy in the shop didn't know its weight.

Is this too much to pay?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 968 ✭✭✭ODD-JOB

sounds about right ,..... in this day and age in ireland , nothing is cheap.
and thats not a blatant rip-off, especially if its leather !!

ive got a cheap vinyl bag , cant even remember the name of it , but ive had it years and it still works like the day i first got it!

dont seprive urself of anything if you really want it.... money we can get more of in time , God willing.

    Enjoy !
