I found something on this while looking up some info on Boru Vodka: the film's title is Freedom Within The Heart, and will star Leonardo DiCaprio as Brian Boru.

According to a movieextras.ie newsletter, filming is likely in 2009, not 2008.

edit: that newsletter is from last November, and contains the following prescient line: "Colin Farrell is in the frame to play Michael Hutchence, in an upcoming biopic of the INXS singer - though he will face stiff competition from Heath Ledger."

    Leonardo DiCaprio:

Now, I know that at some point, Brian Boru was a little boy, but i think the film is set when he was an adult. Who on earth would cast Leo as a real man? - muppet.

I'm the King of the World! Well, OK... Ireland.

Well, he wasn't bad in The Departed. I thought. Haven't see Blood Diamond, where he tried a Sarf Efrican accent.

Freedom Within The Heart?? A film about a brutal 11th-century warlord, leading the Irish nation to "freedom" before nationalism even existed?
The popular image of Brian—the ruler who managed to unify the regional leaders of Ireland so as to to free the land from a 'Danish' (Viking) occupation—originates from the powerful influence of a work of 12th century propaganda, Cogadh Gaedhil re Gallaibh (The War of the Irish with the Foreigners) in which Brian takes the leading role. This work is thought to have been commissioned by Boru's great-grandson, Muirchertach Ua Briain as a means of justifying the Ua Briain (O'Brien) claim to the High-Kingship, a title upon which the Ui Neill had had a monopoly.

The influence of this work, on both scholarly and popular authors, cannot be exaggerated. Until the 1970s most scholarly writing concerning the Vikings' activities in Ireland, as well as the career of Brian Boru, accepted the claims of Cogadh Gaedhil re Gallaibh at face value.

Brian did not free Ireland from a Norse (Viking) occupation simply because it was never conquered by the Vikings. In the last decade of the 8th century, Norse raiders began attacking targets in Ireland and, beginning in the mid-9th century, these raiders established the fortified camps that later grew into Ireland's first cities: Dublin, Limerick, Waterford, Wexford, and Cork. Within only a few generations, the Norse citizens of these cities had converted to Christianity, inter-married with the Irish, and often adopted the Irish language, dress and customs; thus becoming what historians refer to as the 'Hiberno-Norse'. Such Hiberno-Norse cities were fully integrated into the political scene in Ireland, long before the birth of Brian Boru. They often suffered attacks from Irish rulers, and made alliances with others, though ultimately came under the control of the kings of the Provinces of Meath, Leinster, or Munster, who chose those among Hiberno-Norse who would rule the cities, subservient to their loyal subordinates. Rather than conquering Ireland, the Vikings, who initially attacked and subsequently settled in Ireland were, in fact, assimilated by the Irish.

A lot of it is being filmed in Killaloe/Ballina, was advertised about a year ago, and was advertised for extras back then also, as I applied with photo etc and got a letter back saying that all those who will be used will be contacted closer to when filming starts.

The ads were in the press, as I got it in a local paper at the time.

The huy who is directing this also directed the pugilist masterpiece Strength and Honour. He's been trying to get this made for years, coming out with updated press releases stating its stars Di Caprio, and will cost 100million.

The thing is there's no info in any trades about it, nobody else cast and no info from any other movie news source.

Fair play to him if he gets to make it, but id take it all with a pinch of salt.

Strength and Honor? Freedom Within The Heart?

He's got another one called Extreme Dilemma in the works apparently...

Those sure are some special movie titles...

From the movies.ie interview with Strength and Honour director :

    Q. What are your plans after you finish this project?
Mahon: We’re working together again on another project called ‘Freedom within the Heart’. It’s the story of Brian Boru. It’s being shot in Cork.

    Q. What character will you be playing Vinnie?
Jones: I’m playing Ivor of Limerick
    Mahon: He’s the central antagonist.
Jones: What do you mean by antagonist?
    Mahon: I mean bad ass!
Jones : *laughs* Nice way of putting it.

So it's Madsen, Mahon and Jones again. You'd think they'd steer clear of each other after their last effort!

Sorry but Leonardo di Caprio playing Brian Boru is just wrong

This has to be stopped. Boru's the badass. Ivor is the sheriff of ****ing Nottingham.

Leonardo playing Brian Boru is like having Robert DeNiro playing a piece of shrapnel. Leonardo would excavate the whole cast without concern. Brendan Gleeson could play Brian but Leonardo is just too minute.

Seems that the Brian Boru film has been cancelled.

Did anyone serious believe that Mark Mahon will be allowed to direct a 100 million dollar film starring one of the biggest names in Hollywood? His one and only film to date, Strength and Honour may be one of the best Irish comedies in years but it was hardly successful enough to have any studio banging down his doors. Has anyone else seen what his next film is, Strength and Honour L.A. which is either a remake or a sequel. Michael Madsen is set to return.

His talent has nothing to do with him not fitting the role.

Can some one post a news story or something? This seems like a load of made up rumour mongering nonsense with no hard facts at all.

What are you referring to - the project or its cancellation? It was definitely planned a couple of years ago, but now the last news report I can find is from November 2007, and the project is no longer on IMDB. The website is still up, but that doesn't mean anything.

You are the type of what the age is searching for, and what it is afraid it has found. I am so glad that you have never done anything, never carved a statue, or painted a picture, or produced anything outside of yourself! Life has been your art. You have set yourself to music. Your days are your sonnets.

I was just saying that people were talking about this like its going to happen - this is all terribly confusing!

I agree. I was shocked to see the piece in the Indo about it. Does anyone really think a studio will give Mark Mahon 80million to make a movie based in Ireland. Neil Jordan an accomplished academy award winning director couldn't get that kind of money. Strength and Honor was a terrible terrible movie!

RTE are reporting it as well, citing the story in the indo.....
Was laughing at the €80m part.

The book title sounds like it's going to be a Brian Boru saves Ireland from the vikings, I think it was more complicated than that.

The Vikings only played a part, it was basically a civil war but the leader of the lad rebelling against Boru (Mordu I think his name was) had the Dublin Vikings on his side through family ties. Sure Boru himself had plenty of vikings on his side too.

    Source

Colin Farrell could be playing the legendary Irish king Brian Boru in a new big-budget biopic.
Award-winning screenwriter, producer and director Mark Mahon (41), from Rochestown, Cork, said the project is “120 per cent alive” and could become a trilogy as big as Lord of The Rings.
Mahon has said the project will be the biggest film ever made in Ireland.

I don't think there is an studio crazy enough to give €102m to this guy that he say he needs to make this moive.

This is why I love Tabloids; 'Colin Farrell could be playing...' well yes, he could be. But then again, so could I. So could Desmond Tutu. Anyone could be.

This all reads like wishful thinking to me with the name-dropping of 'close friends' and the fluctuating budget; the last article posted here listed the budget as 80 million, so what has happened since then? Seems like a crazy amount of money for what seems to be an unknown quantity. Definitely a case of believing it when I see it.

Given how much of it read like pure tabloid tattle & wishful thinking of one guy from Cork, I'd be very surprised if it ever went into pre-production or storyboarding, never mind full blown filming.

God no, there are enough misconceptions without adding more inaccuracies on the big screen that people will accept as fact.

It would make a great tv series if vikings and the last kingdom wasn't around.
