See the sticky at the head of the forum about adding additional channels on a Sky.

BBC HD is not blocked, though does need to be added into Other Channels.

Good stuff, does it have many programmes on it? Any chance of Six Nations HD?

Very good chance of the Scotland, Wales and England home matches in HD if last year is an indicator.

I got Sky HD when it came out - yes I think I got the Six Nations on HD don't remember whether it was Sky Sports or BBC HD. With the right telly it defeinitely improves the experience.

You've probably already twigged this, but Sky HD won't record off "other channels", that is a drawback. In the UK, BBC/ITV are still promising the launch of freesat in March, with dedicated boxes including HD. This promises to be a serious alternative to SKY HD, especially if there's going to be a PVR in the line-up. BBCHD, BBC3, BBC4, ITV, etc. all on EPG.

Of course that would mean you miss the 6 Nations - not looking hopeful for Ireland, I fear.

Last Year they had FA Cup Football from every round on but this year due to a funding issue they don't so I wouldnt exactly raise my hopes of the rugby being on just cause it was last year.

BTW, C4 is'nt blocked in Ireland, but it can't be added via 'other channels'. The Sky box can receive the symbol rate automatically when a channel is added to the EPG, but the symbol rate is not available as an option manually.

    That's a rather subtle distinction:D

Channel 4 HD is not present on the Irish EPG - perhaps not "blocked", but certainly not "available"

What about Ireland? The BBC is actually the 'host' broadcaster for these games as well. As it is for Italy, for that matter...

They didn't show Ireleand home games in HD. Don't know why because as you said they are the host broadcaster for here too.

thank you MM. I have been testing the hard disk capabilities on my Technomate 6900 using Ireland HD for the past 3 nights.

As we are on the topic of Sport, I recorded the 2007 Dublin v Laois Leinster final on disk (pure HD) last night. They appear to be using some earlier sporting events that were originally shot in HD as part of the trial. Bloody amazing picture when you consider that I'm picking it on on a small cheap aerial :D

This is more down to the old "we don't have the rights after this season, so we are keeping our toys in the pram" line.

Note how Sky and BBC have done the FA Cup season. The 3rd round replay the BBC did was hosted from the studio, The boy Line-acre and co were not at the City-West Ham match. And today, Sky had Richard Keys and Jamie Redknapp out in the cold on the gantry. No studio comforts today, lads.

This was the frequency I tunes BBC HD in was

    10847 V 22000 5/6

I doubt its changed. They have started showing a few shows in HD & SD at the same time like Damages and Heros, I think the actual picture quality of BBC HD is much better than any HD channel sky have especially when you watch the footie.

Its a pity like the ITV channels you cant record them.

    Why not?
I'm using a Technomate 6900 and have been recording HD from both BBC and Ireland channels.
Of course, you need HD burning equipment and disks if you want to keep them, but for playback, I am watching HD :D

PS. Is there ITV HD or are you talking about something else?

Well you could go to sky news interactive, remove the viewing card, press back up and it will rescan the channels and you will epg versions of all the bbc channels and itv channels and bbc hd.
    Record that way.

But not sure if sky + features will still work. havent tried that bit.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,726 ✭✭✭✭DMC

It won't record or playback without a valid viewing card correctly inserted.

There is no ITV HD on satellite, yet. It's on ITV's plan for when Freesat is launched. OP is referring to the 27 ITV regions, and spin-off channels available which cannot be recorded on a Sky+ box.

Was reading a review of this receiver from a UK site, was wondering has anyone got experience of using it?

Specifically it seems to be a Combo Satellite and Terrestial receiver so should in theory be capable of receiving the DTT trials from Three Rock and FTA via Astra 2 etc. It also comes with a a Dual tuner so should be capable of recording programs (other than the one you are watching) onto a HD?

Anyone any exp of this receiver and or can recomend an alternative which is capable of the same.

Not unless it does MPEG4 and MHEG5 on DTT it isn't suitable for Irish DTT.
Just because it does HD/MPEG4/DVBs2 on Satellite, doesn't mean the DTT does MPEG4 too.

I haven't read the spec, so maybe it's fine.

You need FOUR tuners for DTT/Sat combo PVR. (dual on each system).
