Sending my laptop to Dell for repair, with a twist

Long story short, my screen just stopped working a couple of days ago, you could only barely make out what was on the screen at the right angle and lighting. At that time however, I could still plug it into my external monitor. Now, its gotten worse, the monitor no longer recognises the laptop anymore.

Thing is, because I cant use it at all anymore, I can't delete anything that Dell might cope onto when they collect the laptop for repair. Honestly, its not just music but also a few "software packages" i acquired online, something they would probably not take lightly compared to a few downloaded songs.

Has anyone had the same experience when Dell repair these sort of laptops or do any of you know how strongly they could act if they realise what programs are on it?

Dell wont care about illegal software etc, its none of their business. It will be repaired by a subcontractor they use called Getronics, who do all the Dell repairs here in Ireland but I wouldnt worry about it at all.

No, they won't go near your hard drive contents, if you haven't sent it yet just take out your hard drive, if its the same as mine just undo the screw and pull it out. I had a similar problem and they suggested I take it out if I needed to use it on another laptop while its gone. I did anyway, you never know if it would be lost or not in transit.

Don't worry about it. The guy who's going to fix it isn't going to care.
