Demystifying wifi extending

    Hi all,

    I was asked about extending a WIFI network in a house a while ago. The main reason was the following:

    The main AP (Linksys WAP54G) wasn't doing a great job in getting a signal to the top of the house (3 floors). So, I installed a second WAP54G in repeater mode on the 3rd floor. Relocating the main AP is not an option unfortunately.

    A problem has arose lately where by, the laptops (2) seem to associate with 1of the APs, but will not associate with the other depending on the location of the laptop in the house. Maybe I'm asking too much of what's in place now, but my question is, should the 2 APs work like GSM cell stations. Depending on where you are in the house, the stronger of the 2 APs will be used. Is WDS needed here?

    After thinking about the extender idea a bit more...is the workings behind it more like having a remote building that requires WIFI, in which a second AP would be installed in extender mode. In theory, the laptops in the remote building would not be used in the main building where the Internet connection comes in and therefore would not need to associate with or know about the WIFI network in the main building.

    Lastly, is there a difference between a WAP54G and one of these http://www.peats.com/cgi-bin/catalog.cgi?view_product=1&id=23345 ? Is the WRE54G like a WAP54G with extender firmware only.
