Your Motorcycle Garrage

Hi, a word of warning, I gave my bike into a fairly well known (North Wicklow) bike shop for servicing. They managed to drop the bike!!! Causing over €4,500 worth of damage. It turns out they are, apparently, operating with no insurance leaving me, over one year later, having to get the bike repaired myself and pursuing the owner personally. Make sure you know who you are handing your bike over to.

The worst thing about this (apart from the damage) is not the fact that he is not insured it's the fact that he's not paying for the damage!

So they blankly refused to acknowledge or pay?!
    Disgrace....

Most shops have to have a 'road' insurance policy, to test drive etc. But beware, many of these are third party only, which may be why you are left having to stump up, op.

how in the world could they cause 4.5k worth of damage from dropping it?

Isnt that term used when youve 'dropped' the bike when riding. Its what I get told... damn, I dropped the bike....

Sure is. I can't imagine causing 4.5k worth of damage to a bike by just knocking it over unless it was a top end Ducati or something.

More than likely dropped while driving.

There was an article in MS+L last month on the insane cost of repairing damage to dropped bikes, it's quite possible to write off a bike by dropping it depending on what gets damaged and what bike it is... They had an example of a cruiser with engine bars that had saved the engine but caused the bike to roll onto its topside, mashing the tank and controls.

Depending on what the engine bars are fitted to they can do more damage than good.

it is (was) a custom Harley built in the USA. its intresting about the "write off" situation i have been advised to get the bike tested to see if any structural/frame damage has been done, any ideas who could/would do this type of test?

Offhand, maybe Dublin Harley Davidson at the Red Cow? An inspection from them should carry sufficient weight for whatever you need.

At €4,500 (Does that include labour?) you'd be getting close to a write off for many bikes, but I'm assuming the value is at around the €10-€12 for a custom Harley....

10-12k for a Harley? That'll be an old one, then........

I challenge you to ask any shop for theirs, before handing over your pride and joy. The truth is, for the majority, trade insurance is actually impossible to get, at any price........

I am a shop.:) We have always had road cover and public liability. We got fully comp cover only in the last while, before that it was unavailable. We carried that risk, but thank god, it never was an issue. Bike shops are too teeny a segment of the market for insurers to bother bringing out a competitive product.

Apologies if Im drifting off topic.

How many bike shops would let "friends" ride their customer’s bikes and then try to walk away when they crash them? Again I say "check out your motorcycle garage" before you let them have your bike!!!

Allright, I give up; hints are needed! Is it a bike shop that's down a lane-way, or a bike-shop that's in an industrial estate?

is this bray honda you are talking about ?! Only bike shop i know of in bray. If that is the case i would be genuinely surprised. The two lads operating that place always appeared bang on , straight up guys to deal with whenever i dealt with them.

It is not Bray Honda, did not even know there was a Honda dealer in Bray! As I said before i cannont name this shop, yet, as legals going on but it is not a dealer. My bike is a Harley and he works on them.

The Bray Honda Centre is on Duncairn Lane, and deals mostly in Japanese imports. Duncairn Lane is just around the corner from Quinnsborough Road, where there's another bike shop that deals mostly in customs, called 0ld Sk00l Motorcycles.

Maybe some of you noticed a thread I posted recently where someone I know a) had a bike stolen (not the best kind of trend) and b) from an uninsured/ unregistered garage. He wanted the guy to replace the bike but the owner told him get lost 'I only do this as a hobby'.

I think if I had a bike being fixed somewhere I'd think about ringing them up and asking are they a fully insured, registered etc...

From my experience, lots of people do. Not a problem. Id rather show myself as upfront than be tarred with the same brush as the dodgy operators.

Shame on that shop, by the way. No such thing as honour anymore.
