D40X Flash

Hey,

I am looking for some sort of half decent flash for my D40X. Most of them dont list it as being compatable. I did see one flash but couldn't put a defuser or tilt the angle of it.

Anybody any suggestions or reccomendations?

You won't go wrong with an SB600. Dedicated for nikons DSLR's. a bit pricey but worth it in my opinion

A friend of mine with a D40 got an SB400 for something like 100 euro on ebay
Great flash!
the only the SB600 does that this doesn't is to bounce of the ceiling or work remotely, but very accurate otherwise

The SB-400 does indeed offer a bounce facility (just no swivelling) and with a SC-28 cable it can be used off camera (albeit still attached). You can also get a wireless slave/receiver combo which will work with the SB-400 as well.

I've got an SB400 on my D50, and its great for the money. I can't see myself using any of the extra features of the 600 or 800.

and it also looks very well balanced on a D40 with kit lens

I can highly recommend the SB600, great flash and well worth the money, ebay's your best friend for buying things like this. Its great for portraits and closeup's , well worth the money!

The reason I chose the SB600 over the SB400 for my D40 (besides the aforementioned swivel for portrait ability, higher power and wireless ability) is the very useful AF illuminator.

This feature is not to be understated as often the kit lens needs help focusing in low light. With the illuminator you can choose to focus on a non centered focus point and still have it operate. Also a large lens will not block the light (which is often the case with the onboard AF white light).

The SB600 doesn't look too out of place on a D40 either in my opinion.

Just checking, so the SB-600 works fine on the D40? any where i have looked up flashes for the D40 they have only said the SB400.

Hmm - you looked online? Pretty much any flash will work on the camera (the hotshoe is a standard one).

But yes the SB600 will do everything that the SB400 does and more. In fact the wireless capabilities of the flash is limited by the camera (not the other way round). When/if you upgrade to the D80 you'll also be able to fire the SB600 (not SB400) from off the camera.
