MacWorld - What didn't happen

No firmware update for airport extreme base station that addresses the unusable (Slow) usb external disk feature - the feature I bought it for. You have to pony up 500 for the new model instead.

Nothing to speed up .Mac or give more disk space - if it was fast enough to use in the first place.

No increase in capacity for iPhone or Touch.

    No 3G iPhone

No iPhone announcement for other countries - especially us

No iTunes TV episodes or Movie rentals for Ireland.

I thought the sub-notebook was going to be a 10in device that you could slip into any bag - I'd rather have it thicker with a 10in screen than what he has done. I'd be so nervous of bending that MBA in my bag.

All in all nothing new today, nothing groundbreaking anyway, they basically put a 13in macbook on a diet and tweaked a few other things
Disappointed with that, nothing there for me.........

No Bill Gates coming out on stage saying apple is the best.

He has been plugging apple in a good way lately. I believe he has a load of shares in apple. Is this true ?

He has some non-voting shares. There are some fairly complex politics there that I don't fully understand.

What I saw was a further shift away from computing and more towards personal/home entertainment. Very disappointing. The MBA will appeal to a fairly limited market, it'll sell alright but won't cause any revolutions. While it is very thin, it appears from the pics to be actually wider/longer than the MB.

On the plus side the multi-touch touchpad looks interesting, hope they add that to the MBP sometime soon.

i wanted an update to the MBP badly, but nothing came. now i'm worried if i buy one this week that a new one will be "unveiled" later this month or early next month

I think you'd be safe, surely if there was going to be an update to the MBP they would have announced it today. I bought my first MacBook about 10 days ago and was a bit worried that there'd be some amazing announcement today. The MacBook Air is lovely but I wouldn't be paying so much more for less features and then have to invest even more in an optical drive just for the sake of a bit of extra portability, nice but not that nice, think the MacBook suits my needs a lot better.

These Expo keynotes are used to announce new products not updates of old ones. Steve isn't going to waste his time up there introducing firmware fixes or a MBP refresh.

Anyway it was a disappointing keynote. Having to pay for the iPod Touch update is a joke — great way to screw people over, Apple. And I just can't see the point of the MBA. I mean it looks nice but what else? It's too crippled to be worth that price tag imo.

Meh, MW is traditionally consumer event and displays are more geared to the prosumer area. I wouldn't be surprised if there was a MBP/display refresh in the coming weeks tbh.

No xMac or Mac mini upgrades, but that was asking too much I guess.

Now to wait & see if the new AppleTV can be hacked...

Any word on if the time capsule can work both as a backup disc for time machine, and as a regular NAS disk?
And how does a USB disk you stick into it appear?
I've been looking at getting some sort of simple NAS stuff setup, but if this is a nice all-in-one, that'd be cool too!

XviD/DivX for the apple TV or alternatively enabling the 'plugin' feature on it from iTunes would have been good.

Is apple heading for another (pre-OSX) slump? Gouging people for iPod touch update is just a bit over the top.

Have to agree with this, $20 and I'll assume 20e for an software update for such a device is abit over the top,

Yup, agree with you. It seems some people are never happy with the world's slimmest laptop working with the world's best commercial OS.

that comment doesn't even make sense

Think the iPod Touch update is €17.99 here.

World's slimmest laptop at what price? It has a marginally bigger footprint than the Macbook, fewer basic features and a higher pricetag.

Hard to live with a laptop with no ethernet port or firewire too

    Yep, strange Macworld this year.

The Apple pavillion is 60% mac book airs, the rest being iphone and apple tv.......no MBPs, no MBs, no mac pros, no accessories......nothing else.

So based on the heavy MBA exposure here, I think Apple are being selective on their product announcements this year. This show is definitely a consumer show, judging by the 3rd party vendors here......25% of the show has to be MB, MBP or iphone covers/cases and laptop bags or accessories.

The MPA is deceptively small as it tapers on the lid and the base. looks and feels way smaller than the MB or MBP. It is a very solid machine, solid aluminum case, feels much more rugged then the MBP or MB despite its lack of weight.

I think Apple has limited the announcements here at Macworld, by design, to maximize the exposure for the MB Air. Announcing upgrades to MBs or MBPs at the same time would dilute the value of the MBAir.

    - Everyone suspects an MBP revamp is in the works and will be announced in a couple of months, possibly incorporating the multi-touch trackpad, new procs and possibly even SSDs as an option.

    - Likewise, I believe that the MB will see a modest upgrade and an annoucement in April/May/June when the US Education market starts to make its 2008 purchases.

    - I think the 3G iphone announcement will be later in the year.....when there is an actual ship date.

Maybe Jobs and Co recognize that 2008 could be a more difficult year than 2007 and better to keep some announcements in reserve to motivate demand when needed.
