Sky tie or a rip off?

First off, let me say I live in the UK so not sure exactly what the set up over there is, so bear with me if this is old hat.

My Dad lives in Co. Wexford and had a dish fitted by a local retailer and was supplied with a Sky box to pick up FTA channels (he doesn't subscribe to Sky).

He now wants to add a second box in another room and contacted the same retailer. My Dad asked him if he could get a cheap FTA receiver to use instead of an expensive Sky box, but the guy told him he had to use a Sky box to pick up FTA channels.

I'm fairly sure that's not right as here I can pick up those channels on a cheap receiver no problem. Is this retailer on the make... he's quoting €300 or so for the Sky box?

If he is on the make, can my Dad buy a cheap receiver elsewhere? Here in the UK we can get them in the large chain hardware stores now for about £60.

You can get FTA boxes in B&Q, Maplin, Power City and other retailers here these days.

He could try www.satellite.ie for FTA receivers, excellent service from these guys, it will give him an idea anyway of the prices etc.
