Capoeira in Ireland

    Hello!

Any capoeiristas around here? I post in the "Martial Arts" section even though capoeira is not really that, and at the same time, it's more than that, really ;)

I for one play for 18 months with Grupo Candeias in Cork, and it's such a ball! I had practiced karate shotokan for 4 years ages ago before that. Capoeira is brilliant to get to know yourself and push your limits, do things you thought you couldn't do...

Use this thread to share you opinions/experiences/questions about this wonderful art! :D Say why you like it or not, what it brought to you, how you came across it...Feel free! :)

Well i am not living in Ireland at the minute but when i was i played with Officiana de Capoeira (forgive the spelling, its been a few years) up in Dublin which was pretty sweet. Then went to the Candeias classes in Limerick with Mestre Piau for a few years, small classes but good fun, especially during the summer when we would train out in the field. Great except for the grass stains on my whitey white pants.

In New Zealand at the minute and have trained in a few different places, some good, some bad, one the focus was completely on acrobatics, another samba, and in another one there was just myself and the trainer. Going to South America next week for 3 months so definately will try and get to Salvador in Brazil, go to Mestre Bimba's Academie.

Talking about Merstre Piau, he will have a workshop in Cork on the 2nd March ;)

What was your corda and nickname in Candeias?

I just started doing the beginners class there in Cork on Mondays. Finding it very good. Tried to learn in my hometown but there were only 5 or 6 people and they were all at it for a year or two so I found it a bit much for me. Used to come home with my back feeling like it'd be hit with a jack hammer. This class is working out a bit better cos I can build up my fitness a little before I start doing anything serious.

Great stuff, welcome to you :D

You were in Tatu's class, I take it. He comes down to Cork a lot now.

That your back was killing you is not a surprise. I was the exact same but now it's much, much better. THis is down to the fact that your muscles will eventually get used to it and that with time, you will feel more comfortable with your ginga. A bad ginga can do a lot of damage, but it's normal, at the start.

Keep at it, see you :)

I was at one or two of Tatu's workshops in Limerick, you can come away feeling quite sore, in a good way of course. I am still only grey corda at the minute, between work, travel and UNiversity i missed i think three gradings. When i was leaving they were playing around with a few different nicknames, it was Americano the last i heard, cuz i was over there several times during college.

Cuz i went so irregularly there would often be a gap between the classes, used to always be sore until after the second or third class, then it was all good.

Capoeira most certainly is a martial art, if you are in any doubt you should research the history of the art, why it came into being and what it represents.

Ask Gaucho if he thinks Capoeira is a martial art :)

I train with Professor Pele of Grupo Candeias in Dublin, and I am known as Highlander.

I would love to do more Capoeira, trained with candeias in cork a few times and trained with popeye (can't remeber his real name) who used to train near paul st in cork too.

I would definitely class it as a martial art, but it's also so many other things.
I do karate also and at the moment it takes up all my time but I would love to go back to capoeira sometime.

Any events in cork coming up that I could come watch???

Heya lads quick question - Is there any reason why you give each other nicknames?

Yes, capoeira originated in Brazil among the African slaves that were brought over by the Portuguese. Capoeira was outlawed and severely repressed, so in order to protect their identity capoeiristas would use nicknames. Capoeira players would know the nicknames but the police and slave owners wouldn't be able to track people down based on them.

I have been training with Grupo Candeias here in IReland for almost 3 years and I would be surprised if any more than a couple of people in the class actually know my real name.

There's a new capoeria school opening in Waterford, looking forward to trying it out when it opens. Looks like tough going.

That's great news. Do you know who the instructor is, or what group they are part of?

Hoping someone will still respond to this old thread! Anyone know of a capoeira group/class/instructor on the west coast near Sligo or Donegal Town? Thanks very much!
