Do Philips tv's cut off the edges of images?

Not sure if this is in the right place, so sorry if it is.

I was wondering, do Philips widescreen tv's cut off the sides of images, (I'm not too technically minded, so sorry if this all comes out like I'm an idiot. I'm not, honest!)?

I have a Philips lcd tv, a friend of mine has a standard philips tv and another friend has an lcd tv too. And we all suffer from the same problem, the tv's cut off the sides of the image (left and right).

My tv has a setting where you can select different screen ratios, which basically just stretches the image or shrinks it, but even if there's a gap between the actual image and the side of the screen, there's still part of the image missing.

In general, it's not a problem, but I did notice it when I'm watching, say a subtitled movie, and some of the words are cut off if they're near the side of the screen. And on some channels, the channel logo is partially cut off.

I've never noticed this with any other tv, and just found it odd that my mates with Philips tv's have the same problem.

So I was wondering, is this a known issue with Philips tv's? Or does it happen with manny other tv's? Is it easily fixable? Or am I just thick?

Only spotted this. Neither of my Philips do it - 19" and 37".

I think you are mixing up 2 things here.

    1. is overscan which is a standard feature of all TV broadcasts. Not all TVs are the same with so to compensate for this, TV broadcasts use overscan so that the information we want to see is in the middle 90%-95% with the outer 5% having nothing important in it.
    More info found here:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Overscan

    2. is TVs "Auto" display formatting. Some channels make the TV "Auto" feature do strange stretching of the screen formatting. Its best to set it 16:9 or 4:3 yourself.

If you have Sky or Chorus you need to go into the system settings for the box and change its output to 16:9
