Anyone know where to get the silver text on black plate style number plates in motorcycle size? For pre 1990 bikes, tried a few places with no sucess, someone must be making them as there are plenty of people with them. Appreciate any pointers

Try Motorcycle City in Blessington Street Dublin. I don't have their number handy at the moment. They do all styles of reg plates.

I used to have a couple of pre-1980 bikes and allways got my plates in Mountjoy MC, but they closed during the summer. :(

Thanks for the replies lads - I found a place. 'Radiator Services', Rutland Place in Dublin 1 (Near Parnell Square). Word of warning though -not cheap! €30!!

N P Number Plates Ltd in Dublin, North Circular road, I had them make up a few black / silver plates for vintage bikes. The Army are the only ones legally allowed use to use these plates on modern vehicles.

Eh, no they are not

Check your facts before you post. Any import or vehicle registered before 1991 can display these plates.

What are you smoking ?? What I can gather from your garbled nonsense is that you are trying to say that a bike is "acient" :rolleyes:when its 15 !!!

Where are you people getting this rubbish from ?

A car or bike is a classic in Ireland when it reaches 30 years old and then it has
severly reduced tax and not until then.

Most bike insurers class a bike over 15 as a classic and office cheap insurance, but this doesn't mean the bike is past its sell by date.

White number plates with Black Numbers, were introduced in 1987,

the only regplates that can be Black/silver are:
    Army
    Classic /Vintage
    Navy ??
Cars registered pre '87, ie , 345HZK or 569YTP, or smilar

oh and cars with ZZ plates

Basically any vehicle that was imported or first registered in this country from Jan '87 onwards must have White Plates with black lettering & numbering (with the above exceptions)

And if KTRIC would like to contradict me, feel free to , as long as you can provide the revelant legislation

immediatly Prior to 1987 rear plates were red background with raised black plastic numbers (which were often prone to breaking or falling off!) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irish_Vehicle_Registration_Plates

You can use white/silver on black up to 1991 according to revenue. My father has a letter from the revenue commissioners about this as he was in the motor trade at the time and they had a IR£1000 fine for supply of illegal plates. Post 1991 you could only supply white on black according to the letter.

It may be very difficult to find relevant legislation as it could easily be a revocation order which allowed white on black from 87-91. I'm not stating 100% that legislation even exists, just what revenue advised motor traders at the time.

i've done some reaearch, and although it it said that the current reistration plates do not have to be conformed to by vehicles forst registered prior to 1991,

i believe that they are referring to the inclusion of the 'blue stripe'

prior tyo 91, the registration plates did not have the blue stripe with IRL and EU logo of stars.

Basiscally you still have to have a white plate with black letters.... but you dont need to include the Blue stripe

I got one of those plates made for my last bike which was a 01 reg. I went to CBF in Turners Cross, Cork City. Cost about 30 quid.

I'd say your right on this one mate.
I've been driving bike's for some years now i drive an 89D Goldwing and i know by law i must have the EU plate on it
i was informed by the Garda it's only the pre 87 and must be the old irish number ie 999-DZE AND SO ON....

No you don't. A black on white plate with no EU stripe would be perfectly legal on an '89. Sadly Guards are often the least knowledgable people wrt the Road Traffic Acts.
