Learning through Youtube

What do ye think of the idea of learning something new, from scratch, through youtube?

For example, learning a new language from scratch?
Do you think it would work better seeing the teacher, as in a proper class recording or just using cartoons or powerpoints?

I'm trying to help a friend learn Irish, but they'll be learning on their own when they have time.

    I'd love some suggestions!! Thanks!

    One word - farcical.

Videos can be used to supplement learning, but sitting passively is no way to learn. Ask any of my students. :)

Besides, the Youtube environment is not conducive to learning - it is more geared to entertainment and as such, the user-interface is a nightmare.

http://coursesites.blackboard.com <-- the only online fully interactive learning site that has been proven highly successful... YouTube is only for people who have absolutely nothing to be doing, not for learning.

I am curious how you can show something is "proven highly successful".

Do you have anything to do with that site? To me it looks like a glorified Moodle site that, get this, you actually pay for.

yeah, only cos they probably commissioned their own 'survey' into user responses.

There are loads of open source elearning suites out there that you can get for free such as claroline and dokeos.

As for youtube being for dossers, that's rubbish. if you're lookin for something serious you'll find a serious clip on it. I needed to learn how to convert powerpoint presentations with audio clips to an AVI and it taught me how in a 2 minute clip. So I don't know how you can think that it's not for learning.
