Get a ps3 and you'll be fine regarding updates. Its a great bluray player and you'll get great extreas like - music player, web browser, photos etc. You can get one for €400 these days. Im not sure what are the prices of a standalone player but they were expensive.

This info is a good few months old. For shame, BBC.

Yes, PS3 is probably the best blu-ray entry point at the moment. Don't think of it as a games console. It's a near full entertainment box. You can stream music, pictures and movies form your main pc or whatever, straight to the PS3 to your big screen TV. It rocks.

Hmm, no its not, Sony only said this the other day, and its only the Standalones from Samsung, Sony etc which have the issiue, these are not upgradable and do not have a ethernet port that is part of profile 2.0, sony also said they cannot confirm newer titles carrying the Profile 2 mark will play in older players bar the ps3 as they cant be updated to support this new tech, most titles will play although will be limited in features...

This Linky specifies that this was known back in November.
This mentions it as far back as September.

There are many more references but I just can't find them at the moment. There are many article in The Register, if you feel like researching it, but this is very old news.

No bother. Sony may have just made the announcement yesterday or whatever, but the manufacturers of the blu units knew this for a long time. Sony aren't the only blu players. They just seem to have the louder voice :)

ps3 is great buy as its got a built blueray player, and it is upgradable with the software updates that sony send when new versions of the blueray profile are realeased. Such as Picture in Picture due for release in 2.0 of the blueray profile.

Why anyone would want to buy a blu ray player when they could get a ps3 for the same price is beyond me. You get so much more with the ps3 and there's regular firmware upgrades to keep it current - its a no brainer really
