Cystitis-any advice?

Hi, when I was 14 I suffered very badly with kidney infections, which eventually got sorted out but left me prone to cystitis. I'm now 28 and usually only suffer with 2-3 attacks a year, which were easily cured by over the counter medicine and lots of cranberry juice. But the last 8 months or so I've been getting more frequent attacks that arent so easily cured by over the counter medicine. Most of the times I've gone to the GP no bacterial infection has been evident and I'm reluctant to be taking anti biotics unnecessarily. I would much rather adjust my life to prevent these attacks if possible. I take cranberry tablets and echinacea daily, drink plenty of fluids and am careful with hygiene and also alcohol intake.
Ok, so here's my question-last week I was suffering but not really badly enough to fork out 50 quid to go to the GP, so I took paracetamol, upped my fluid intake and took it easy when I could. Over the weekend I was fine and this morning I was grand, but when I got home this evening I had pain again. So I can only deduce that something I eat during the week is causing the discomfort. Here's what I ate today - two slices toast with butter, one bowl porridge, a ham&cheese sarnie, packet prawn cocktail crisps, apple and a kiwi. I'm thinking maybe it's the kiwi that's caused this. Anyone confirm this for me?
If anyone can give me any help or advice that'd be great.
    Thanks

    Ugh.. i understand!!

I got cystitis when I was 19 and then it blew into a very bad kidney infection and i just seem to be prone to it now!

I read something about yeast.. i know yeast is more to do with thrush but how you should tey not to have to much of it. it's mainly found in rice, pasta and bread..of course which make up most of my diet as i don't eat meat!!.

I find if i don't drink pleny of fluids or if i drink mostly caffeine all day like coke and tea and am...stingy as such the next day.

it's really sucky, i just hate being on anti biotics anyway!

Can you ask to be referred to a consultant so they can check out your bladder? It could be something non-bacterial.

Thanks. I actually went to my GP last night as had bad pain in my sides as well so knew it had gone to my kidneys :( I have a yeast intolerance so I limit the amount of that I eat as well as sugar. If I get another infection soon then my GP said he'll refer me for some tests, but basically this time was just a slow brewing infection :|

had this before and it was really horrible! Had to keep going to the toilet, all day long! I got something in my local chemists, it was over the counter and only cost about €6.00. I cannot remember the name of the product but it contained cranberry and it came in a white and blue box. It worked really well and I felt fine the next day.

yeah, that's called cystopurin. i've used it before and did last week but it didn't work. I'm on anti biotics now since Tuesday but think I'll have to go back to the doctor as they don't seem to be working :( couldn't sleep last night with the pain in my side
