Duty Rates on DVD / Software ?????

Can someone please clarify the duty rate % that is applied to DVD / software.

I just received a delivery through An Post of the following

    Blade Runner Blueray Ultimate Giftset

I purchased it from DVD Pacific for €47.84 and added to that was the shipping cost of €13.47. So the total price was €61.31. I was surprised to see that a customs charge of €30.40 is noted on the box. Even allowing for duty and vat it would seem excessive to charge nearly half the purchase price.

(It takes the good out of buying online and getting a bargin)

Surely something is wrong here. I was out of the house when the post lady delivered the package but no doubt she will be back to request payment when making her next rounds.

Any advise on the charges, I'm all ears.

    Thanks in advance

Difficult to find the exact rates on www.revenue.ie for items, but it did point me towards this website. This link is when I searched for DVD and followed a few other links. Then, choosing USA as originating country, it says the duty rate is 3.5%. Add VAT at 21% on top and a handling charge of €5-15, €5 normally for An Post, to your original €62 and you'd get €82.64 in total, about €20 fee then. €30 does seem excessive. They may have used a different rate, or possibly some pleb didn't notice that the currency was in US$ and thought it was euro, hence the difference.

Ring revenue an question it maybe? Is there a breakdown of the exact charges on the customs label?

Thanks for the reply. No breakdown on the charge applied. No label on the box, just a US Postal Customs Declaration stamp on side of box stating software as the contents. Hand written figure of 30.40 wrote in blue ink.

Hopefully I've was jumping the gun about the extra charges and this figure is the declared value of the shipment and therefore no duty / vat charge has been applied. :):)

I guess I'll know when the postie arrives to the house the next time.

I take it you have the item, but didn't have to pay anything. In that case, there's nothing to pay. An Post won't hand it over until you pay, if there is anything. Couriers tend to deliver, then bill you later.
