Road Signs: Do I see dark spots

Either I'm going blind or everything the signs around the country are getting black spots. Anyone else noticed.

The problem seems to have arisen since the cold frost we had last week. I was travelling towards Dublin from Ashborne on the N2 and noticed that the new sign posts were not very reflective to my headlights and appeared to have dark areas all over the sign. Once I got very close to the sign I noticed they became more legible.

However last friday night (which was a warmer night) I also noticed it on the M7 and N8 on the section of road from Cashel to Cahir. The only real common thing about this is the signs are on relatively new sections road.

Does anyone know why this happening. Anyone else notice this.

frost on the surface, preventing & distorting the clear reflections you usually get.

Unlike real 1st world standards to which we presumably aspire (though sometimes I wonder !), our signage doesn't have independent lighting so we have to wait for sunrise and a thaw for frosty signs to once again be fully visible and reflective

I've noticed this lately too - eg: the new 60 & 50km/h signs at the County Club appear to have a grey (rather than red) surround at night until you get close.
