Bus & Rail Tickets

I am looking at my options for getting from Adamstown to Merchants Quay (opposite the Four Courts) via public transport Monday to Friday. I have the option of bus or train, with the train obviously offering a faster route into town than buses. I wouldn't even bother conducting a spot check like this if the train service was good. It does appear to be pretty good in the mornings with 4 trains leaving Adamstown between 7.30 and 9am. However in the evenings it is not great with trains leaving Heuston at 16.05, 17.15, 18.05 and 18.50. On this basis I need to have the flexibility of using the bus if train times don't suit. A single bus trip costs €2 and the train cost €2.10. A monthly bus & rail ticket costs €113. On the basis that I only use it twice a day Monday to Friday, which corresponds to approximately 46 trips (26 working days x 2 trips per day) per month, the monthly ticket would work out to cost me €2.46 per trip - this doesn't make a whole pile sense now does it?? If I went to the trouble of purchasing an Annual ticket, which costs €980, it would work out at €1.76 per trip, which would make sense - but who the hell is going to fork out so much and commit to this for a year?????

What do you all think of this? Are there any better options for me? Devise an integrated ticketing system perhaps??!!

Bus & Rail does seem to be the best thing if you want the choice of using one or the other on any given day. Do you only use public transport to get to and from work? I use public transport for non-work things so I get more benefit out of it.

Also 46 is not equal to 26x2. The usual working month (assuming Mon-Fri) would be about 22 days making 44 trips in either direction a month. This would put each trip at €2.56.

    Bus+ Rail ticket = Integrated.

Check with your employer if they will apply for the taxsaver tickets, you can save up to 47% (depending on your tax bracket) on the monthly/annual tickets you quoted.

If you end up paying for single fares the travel 90 bus ticket (bought in books of 10) is currently €1.70 and is valid for any single bus journey and any transfers made within 90mns.

sorry - i mean't to say 23 working days. eitherway it is not the most cost effective option. i cannot see myself using public transport for anything else other than the standard work trip.

where can i pick up the travel 90 bus ticket?

At DB head office in O'Connell Street or at any Dublin Bus ticket agent.
