Gardening Growing Tobacco

Does anyone know anything about growing tobacco? I know it can be grown in Ireland. Not only can it be used of smoking but also as an "organic" pesitcide.
I'm interested in trying to grow some this year, I've seen it done years ago. But I have no idea where to find seeds (without buying them from abroad on the internet) or what conditions the plants should be kept under. I have a glass house, but I don't know if they even needs to be kept there.
    I'd appreciate any suggestions.

Try here. If you just want a plant for scent and then digging back into ground you could try here

Nicotiana seeds are readily available as a summer flowering plant with a lovely scent. They are of the same family as tobacco so presumably the leaves would have the same use for pest control. They are worth growing anyway, and I don't think there are any legal implications for growing a few tobacco plants in your garden.

Yes, if you have the correct licence.

I saw an article in the Irish Times about growing decorative tobacco plants,It was in some big public garden, I very much doubt whether they had a license from the Revenue to grow Tobacco.
If it is just for ornamental use then I can't see it being a problem, unlike other plants that are grown for smoking uses.....

if a licence could be obtained, would it be smokeable?most smoking tobacco would be grown in dry sunny places i would have thought?

Im sure it would, supposebly it can be grown in the exact same conditions as a tomato plant, meaning there is only one season in Ireland to grow it, whereas in other countries (hotter ones) you can grow all year long.

Growing nicotinia in the garden is no more illegal than growing opium poppies (Papaver sominferum). Both are attractive garden plants, the seeds are readily available, and I and millions of other people have grown them with no problems.

I have no idea whether the decorative nicotinia would be of any use as tobacco for smoking, I think you will find that the curing/storing process is pretty precise and requires specific conditions. All varieties contain nicotine though.

It may be that while growing the plants is legal, turning them into drugs of whatever variety is not.

Edit: just realised I answered this question three years ago!
