Go into DBPowerAmp Codec central and download the aac codec, the free version of DBPowerAmp is limited in options but works fine and is free

    Bingo.

You can pick and choose what codecs you want it to support.

Try with Foobar2000 0.95, enqueue or play your audio files form Windows Explorer. Make sure to configure Foobar2000 to be associated with all audio file extensions.

THen highlight the files you want to crosscode, right-click, highlight "Convert...", in the dropdown choose an MP3 preset (-V4 is a reasonible filesize/quality ratio for the ZEN), locate LAME.exe (or download it, it's freeware) on your computer and off you go :)

Oh, and according to this page, .aa is not an AAC file extension.

Which ZEN? I know that a ZEN Vision :M with an updated firmware (1.41.01 or higher) supports Audible files.

No, doesn't. Check on creative website if the latest f/w does support Audible files, though ;)
