Ok, i recently got an ipod nano off an irish seller. It was posted on friday nd got it this morning.

However the item is a fake, it doesnt have the standard ipod software, it doesnt have the touch navigation yoke, and also it doesnt connect to iTunes.

Am i entitled to a refund or anything??
    I payed with paypal.

Looks like false advertising to me.
Start an E-Bay dispute or Wenzel the seller.
I've never seen a fake iPod before.

They are made in China, are actually quite common, I know a few people who puchase them as flash drives because they are very cheap.

How much did you pay for it? Is the seller definately Irish and living in Ireland?

Totally false advertising, as the item you received isnt the same as one pictured, get on to ebay, they take selling counterfeit items very seriously, should get money back ok!

Contact the seller first, tell him your not happy you got a fake product. Give him a couple of hours to respond to see what he offers.

If your not happy, open a dispute with paypal, you will have to send the "ipod" back registered and have proof of this to show paypal, you should get your money back alright, minus the fee of sending it back to him.

It's probably not even 8 gigs, they use a software hack to make players that have far less memory look like more. When you copy the mp3's on, they will corrupt.

A forum setup on it here.

I have started a dispute with paypal. So im hoping i will get some contact soon. I emailed the person a cuple of hours ago and still no reply

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 929 ✭✭✭sternn

Ok, just got contact off the seller:

    i had no idea sorry
    i can offer u a full refund
i had no idea it wasnt an official ipod

not through paypal, but by ebay email.

You will get your money back alright, I bought 2 4 gig "ipods" from a guy in Great Britain, which turned out to be in Hong Kong, they were only 22 euro each so I said I would take a chance.

The scam is you open a dispute with paypal, your obliged to send the products back to get a refund, the party claim they never recieved it stating the Chinese postal system is corrupt.

So your out of pocket for the product and the return postage.

If you contact some of these rougue sellers they sometimes offer a partial refund in return you don't give them negative feedback.

What happened in my case was that they were in fact 1 gig players, not a bad player actually. I contacted the seller saying I formatted them and they turned out to be 1 gigs instead of 4. He claimed I corrupted the memory.

Opened dispute with paypal, telling them the scam and showing all corespondance, Not only did I get a full refund, I didn't have to return the players.

This guy could be ligit, he seems to have only sold a few items, he will be notifyed of the dispute through paypal, you should def get your money back thou, it just will take the best part of a month.

Thats good news, tell him you want the refund now, before you return the item and the cost of postage to return it.

Ok better news, i have now been refunded my total fee (including the origional postage). Do you think i should demand him to pay for my postage back?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 256 ✭✭patto_chan

That guy is selling other fakes as well - an obviously fake iPhone.

However, there are a few warning signs there to make you think twice about buying anything significant from this guy.
His feedback - though 100% - is limited, only 26.
Of this feedback only 4 relates to him as a seller and 3 of those are from eBayer users recently registered in Ireland with only one transaction to their name.

I prefer to buy from eBayers with lots of feedback and who have good feedback as sellers from other well-established eBayers.

Good luck with your appeal process.

Of course, why shouldn't you? Make sure you register it thou, this guy isn't as innocent as he makes out.

He is prob buying them in and selling them at 4 times the price, there is more confidence and trust if you buy from someone in your own county. I think he is a cowboy, he is selling a few dodgy items.

    ok, a new email:

"u can keep it if u want
im not gna relist it as its not an apple product anyways so its up to
you if u want to keep it free"

I have no use for it since it doesnt work with itunes, so what do you think?

All this seems a bit dodgy...

On that page it says "Brand new boxed apple CDM (China) version iphone with the following features: iFOE P168 (Made in Taiwan)". This is a P168 Cect phone, like this available on DealExtreme for 1/3 the price. This isn't an Apple iPhone, it's an iFone (or iPhone clone as they're being called). This guy is nothing more than an unimaginative scammer trying to cash in on peoples ignorance of new technologies. I'm sure he's well aware of these items not being genuine Apple.

This is also the 2nd "iPhone" he has listed saying "bought on ebay unwanted gift!!! there is no manual with it!!!!". Unusual that he would by two of the same item, with no manual, as unwanted gifts. I get the feeling he's shilling his own auctions, and ended up "buying" his own phone the last time.

    Classic scammer signs.

At this point, he's refunded your money and you haven't sent back the "iPod" yet. I'm 100% sure this guy is a scammer, and I've no time at all for scammers, so if I were you I probably wouldn't return it at all. Dishonest yes, but if I know I'm being scammed then there are no rules and playing fair goes out the window.

If you want to, get him to pay the cost of delivery for sure, don't be 1 cent out of pocket over him. Make sure to factor in the cost of getting to the Post Office and the cost of packaging it. Including reg post, I'd say €30 is a good estimate. Then leave negative or neutral feedback saying how he's selling fake items, but that you got a refund.

Keep it so. Give it to someone, perhaps a niece or nephew who wouldn't have much requirements in an mp3 player.

He's probably trying to make sure you don't leave negative feedback, it would pretty much kill that account for future scamming.

Just leave none I'd say, Thats what I would do in this situation, Hes prob hoping you'll leave him possitive feedback making his account look better (Considering most the buyers must be his m8s by the looks of things), just ignore it now, that would be best solution I'd say

You didnt do too bad man ;) I'd say those "ipods" would cost him a good over 20 euro to import :) Down with scammers

I really did get the good end of the stick. I now have a music player for my car, and i'll get another REAL one for myself! :D It is a fully functioning video player and mp3 player. And not a cent paid for it!

Even if you do get your money back I'd report this seller to eBay anyway.
He's just going to continue to try and scam other people - as seen in the fake iPhone sale.

I've reported the fake iPhone to eBay. It will be interesting to see if they act quickly and take down the auction before it finishes at 9.19pm tonight.

It is interesting to see that 3 of the bidders who have bid this fake iPhone to 300 Euro already have no eBay feedback and have only ever bid on this item.
    Suspicious.

Seems they didn't get to that one before the auction ended, for 410 euro too!

He had another one (same phone again, unwanted present) yesterday listed as an Apple iPhone, so I reported it as being fraudulent. Somewhat to my surprise, it's gone today. eBay do listen then, and there was me thinking they were pretty much useless. I'll have some salt with my hat please :o

    hey all..

ive talked to some of these sellers and the funny thing is they are convinced their "ipods" are better quality than apples (yea right)

just a word of warning, not all sellers will give a refund so easily..

most sellers will say its the buyers fault if they dont read the description.. so my advice would be .. if it doesnt say "authentic apple" or the photos look generic either ask the seller outstraight if their authentic

90% of these people are usign drop ship companies .. they never see, hear or touch the products they are sellng.

Be Careful if returning an item outside of Ireland, as Paypal advised me to Return an n73 to Portugal by Reg. Post, then closed the dispute because they couldn't track the item once it left Ireland.
Contacted them a few times to no avail.
150 Euro down and no phone.
If it's in Ireland you'll be ok.
