Exterior Finishes for House

Wondering if any of you can help.

I'm just about to get an architect to draw up some plans for my house, but there are SO many possible finishes (& so many I prob know nothing about), I was wondering if there were any good places around the country to go to view samples of brick, stone, dash, render type finishes so I can get a better idea of what I'd like.

You know, like showrooms of places that sell such finishes.

If you could recommend any good ones I'd be really grateful.
    Thanks.

You could probably google a lot of the manufacturers and/or suppliers sites and while Im aware that its not the same as seeing the product first hand its still a help.

Look up the addresses of a couple of building products/gardening supplies centres and drive round. House finishing is really down to personal taste.

I'm in the northeast of the country. I don't mind travelling down as far a Dub & far west as the midlands, & then obviously up as far as you can go on this island.

    Thanks for your replies.
Muffler:- I'll do some googling when I get home later, but I don't even know who manufacturer the stuff, so don't know who to look up, but I'll see how I get on anyway.

The only one I know of is Fernhill stone in Co. Monaghan.

We built a house last year, and found it almost impossible to find any kind of 'showroom' for this sort of thing - even here in Dublin. What we did was drive around looking at houses and taking photos of what we really liked. Then the builder got samples (for us it was dashing because of the no-maintenance finish we wanted outside) and we picked the one we liked best.

    Spot on!

Drive around the country and keep the eyes pealed for inspiration. Its the best way to see something that you would like on your own house IMO.

the finish of the dwelling should be sympathetic to the vernacular of the area and suitable for the design. Every possible finish will not be available to you as an option. Some planners view some finishes with inappropriateness eg red brick in some rural areas, or yellow sandstone in areas alien to it.

Also remember some more unusally finish may be applicable, depending on design.... eg slate, stucco, lime render, shingles, etc.
