Long time reader and first time poster. :) I've had my camera for a while now but have never really tried to use it properly. Macros and body shots are what hold my interest at the moment and this is what I'll be having a go at for the next while.

I imagine I'll be asking a lot of questions here, mostly about lighting. :)

Anyway here's my first attempt at trying some body shots.....

Image is nicely exposed and well composed but I feel that the focal point being on the button hole of the jeans is distracting, I want it to be on the body, moreso the tatoo as it seems as it should be the focal point of the image. If its a body shot I feel the point of interest should be on the body.

You seem to have the lighting under control too.

    Pete.

I have to agree with Pete there on the focusing - easily fixed next time round, and worth experimenting with by shooting a few in the one series. It's just a tad dark for me also. Aside from that it's a lovely shot and well composed. Very evocative.

concept is good but it looks far too dark to me, i cant really see too much focus but a bit more light and punch would improve it no end..

Hey thanks for the C&C there. It's funny when other people point things out that you hadn't noticed before (or didn't mind before). I see what you mean about the focal point of the image. It probably would have worked better if the tattoo was sharper. I had a look back through the photos I took that evening and I didn't have any other images that were sharp enough and used the tattoo as the focal point. Worth exploring for the next session I think :)

I haven't got a calibrated monitor so brightness can be an issue for me. I've had another go at processing the above image. I've added a different border and brightened it up a bit.

Is the processing a little better/more suited on this version?

Hi and welcome! The 2nd is much better in terms of brightness (do treat yourself to a calibrator - they're great!), but I'd agree with the others that the focus should be on the tattoo. Other than that I think the lighting and composition are good
