    Hi,
Looking to get rid of my old set of clubs which have seen better days and were mainly used for playing par 3 golf.
As i am a complete novice at golf i was wondering can anyone suggest a good brand of club which wont have me absolutely broke.

    Muller_Magic,

Theres a few decently priced starter sets out there but my main advice would be to go to some of the golf shops and try out a few clubs. See which ones feel best and then see if they are in your price range. If not, then ask on here or in the shop for similar irons for less money.

Topflite/Wilson/Ram do starter sets which include everything e.g. bag/driver/hybrids/putter. These are reasonably priced and good for starting off. However, if youre planning on playing regularly then you may want to change a relatively short time down the line.

Hope this helps. I'm sure other people have different opinions.

Stooge is spot on..was shopping with a beginner friend, McGuirks in Blanchardstown had very good starter sets Spalding/Ram/Topflite all less than €275 including carry bag..
Only other advice would be to find a decent set you like the feel of & buy em off ebay..

Always worth considering s/h clubs. Can often get a quality forged branded set for the price of what I would consider an inferior starter set.

I have a starter set that I bought in McGuirks, Ram, €200 with bag included. Have since replaced the bag with a cart and bag I got in mcGuirks for 100 quid and have added a Wilson 3i I picked up for 40 quid.

I think buying a good starter set and then replacing as you improve and play more is the way forward.

Its just hard to find playing partners now!

go for second hand stuff if you are going to play a bit

most of the starter stuff is new and shiney, but pure crap

I notice that e-bay has been mentioned as a possible source of second hand clubs and I would highly recommend it. However beware of fake 'brand name' clubs being offered for very low prices. There are a lot of fake new Callaway's being offered at the moment. Callaway does not wholesale to e-bayers, so if the price is too good to be true...........then it is!! A genuine Callaway will have a serial number on the 8 iron, so ask the seller for it. Having said that there are a lot of genuine people selling their used clubs and there are bargains to be had. A good set of second hand Ping's is my recommendation.

I tend to agree with 2nd hand but rather than ebay try to find a good pro shop that sells 2nd hand clubs. Fortwilliam sells some good stuff but that's in Belfast.

Wilson Fatshafts were £100/€135 which is a good price for a fair set of irons.

I'd stay away from starter sets if I were you. Most of them are pure crap with really, really cheap shafts. Cut and glue jobs and completely not matched.

Have a look at the 2nd hand stuff in your local golf shop. Aim for a decent but not top brand name. Ebay can be good but you really need to get the right flex of shaft if you can't try them first.

The local driving range should have some to try out also, if not try friends clubs and see what works or dosen't.

Oh and if you can get your swing speed measured with a driver and a 5 iron it would help picking the correct specs for your clubs. If not post which club you typically hit 150yards, ( be truthful):D
