Windows Defender Compromised?

I just tried to update the definitions file for Windows defender (after a very long time) but was told that there are no new definitions available. However it says that the last definitions file was created on the tenth of jan at 3:04. However, I've been abroad since the ninth and no-one has had access to my computer during that time so there's no way that this file was downloaded.

Can windows defender renew it's definitions without me knowing and just displays when the file became available or should I invest in some heavier software?

If this is Vista, then thats normal. Windows Update runs automatically in the background and includes the Windows Defender definitions. It downloads and installs them every night at 3:00 AM as long as your computer is on and connected to the net. If your not, it checks and updates the next time your on the net, in the background.
