Sports writing

I've been offered some work, writing about sport once a week. I won't name the paper, but it's just past halfway down sales wise.

I've only had very early discussions, but I'll be writing a weekly horse racing article which will be around 700 words, if I accept. What sort of pay should I expect/ask for. They've left it to me to make an offer. At the moment, I do some paid online writing, but that's different I suppose. Online, I get paid per article and simply invoice them every month.

If anyone knows what the average is, or how it works, please let me know. What sort of difference in pay is there between the top sellers and the lower selling papers?

Is it normal to charge per word?

Any advice at all is appreciated.

I would say between 150 to 200 euro per piece, depending on the paper.
