Where to buy music online - but not iTunes

    I have often bought albums when I only ever wanted to listen to one song on it. Could you please suggest legal reputable websites that I can buy individual songs from. I hate Apple with a passion so I dont want to use iTunes.

    My beloved Archos awaits your replies. Thanks.

    Mods please feel free to move if this is in the wrong place.

    Someone recommended www.lavamus.com to me from here, so I signed up and it's good! 15 cent per track, that's in US money. First track is free when you sign up. Legit and legal!

    I suppose it depends on the type of music you like. I tend to listen to electronic and indie type stuff so use the following sites on a regular basis;

    http://www.bleep.com

    http://www.boomkat.com

    http://www.roughtradedigital.com

    You can download individual tracks on all of the websites although they tend to be a similar price to iTunes rather than the next to nothing prices offered by mp3sparks and alike. All tracks are DRM free as well.

    I also have a couple of monthly subscriptions to www.emusic.com which gives me 90 downloads a month for 22 Euro, I have a legacy plan with them so if you sign up now you only get 75 tracks a month which isn't quite such a good deal. They normlly have some sort of offer on where they give you 25 - 50 free downloads for just trying it out. Don't go over the free download limit if you want to just take the free ones and cancel or they will just start charging you. The site only has independent record labels on board so the content may not suit your tastes.

    As for the more mainstream stuff Amazon have started offering DRM free mp3's in the States and may well do at the .co.uk site.
