I have noticed as of late that the Garda website seems to never get updated - and it never seemed to get updated all that much before this.

    http://garda.ie/home.html

Just some little issues, like the How to Join An Garda Siochana link visible on the front page is broken, it links to this and the last press released posted on the site dates October of last year. The last big change I notice is that the picture of Noel Conroy has been replaced by new commissioner Fachtna Murphy.;)

Also, is it me or do the buttons in the top right in dark blue not work?

Anyway - Im not trying to be nit picky, but what are your opinions, do you think a Garda website is actually important?

you shud of put this query on the main garda thread...and yes the site is important for Garda hopefuls looking for information on the force

the site is a joke, its well behind any other policing sites where you can even report some minor offences or losses on! It really needs an updating for recruits and for general publicity!

They only work in IE, so if you're using firefox or opera or another such browser you won't be able to use them, but if you have IE then you can use it through that.

and i agree that the website needs a complete redesign, similar to the way the defence forces made their website more informative.

It is a pity that the Missing Persons section never seems to get updated either. Yes, they do add new cases but they don't seem to remove some cases that have already been solved.

That can be confusing particularly if you are looking for correct numbers of currently missing people. You are still counting some of the already found ones.

The Garda site is sh*te... But the DF website is pretty decent IMO. I find it fairly helpful with information, and it's laid out pretty well. Dunno why it's like relative to other militaries though.

The explanation is an easy one. The guards have never really embraced technology like the private sector has. Just one look at our radio system says it all.

The Garda Press Office run the website, and they have told my group when I was in T'more a few months back that the site is going to be completely overhauled and modernised this year.

AFAIK they don't have a webmaster. You'd be best off to write a complaint to the Chief Super in charge of IT and CC'ing it to the Commissioner...on paper of course!

Guys, situations like the out-of-date Garda website are explained by the availability of funds.
In the public service, a sum of money is set aside for something and when that runs out nothing happens until the new cash allocation is made available. Now if people start doing it (the running repairs/maintenance thing) for nothing then the cash would never be made available. And when a decision is made to completely replace something then the funds dry up completely because it's bad management to put public money into something that's gonna be replaced soon. Sometimes the replacement can take a number of years from decision time to implementation and that can be a time when people start noticing the ongoing neglect. Does that help?

Good analysis Abraham. That logic is understandable, and I know that it is probably what the Gardai are thinking, but if the site is offering a service to someone, it is better to maintain it in the interim than to simply forget about it until a replacement comes along. Anyone planning for any business should allow for delays in the introduction of replacement.

Anyway, considering the basic format of the site, one person working part time at it would be able to do the basics necessary - one day a week spent updating press releases, etc. should do it. How much is that going to cost? And saying that it has no budget for it makes no sense - in this day and age, the internet is one of the most important methods of communication and the cost of updating the site should at least partly come from the standard Press Office budget.
