Thats a very vague question. It's like me saying that I like cars and want one, are they good? lol

I'm just joking, but seriously you'll find that there are very bad guitars out there and very very well made guitars and everything in between. A wide range in quality and price also. These days you can pick up a well made guitar for not too much though, you just need to know what to look for. :)

    What's your budget? :)

Are you asking if its worth buying the hybrid electro-acoustic, or if you're better off with one or the other? I can't really help you either way cause I play bass, but I just thought I'd try help clear it up.

I'd recommend trying a few tunes on some in a shop, and seeing if it suits your style. If you're near Blanchardstown, go to Monster Music in the Coolmine ind. estate, they're very accomdating with letting people try before they buy, they'll even set you up with a rehearsal room sometimes, not sure if they have electro-acoustics in store at the minute though.

    thanks for the replies.

yeah i was interested in getting the hybrid type.so what i was asking was are they generally good guitars and save u from buying an acoustic+electric?

im only starting but id be prepared to spend a few bob if it was worth it.i suppose maybe about 600 for guitar+amp+case.that might not be enough for a good one but starting off i dont wanna spend an absolute fortune.

by the way joe robot, u shud get a car. they are great!

Semi-acoustics and Electro-acoustics are very different from each other.

Semi-acoustics are basically electric guitars with a semi hollow body, semi hollow as there is a center block down the middle of the guitar.
On the cheaper side of things, Ibanez's Artcore series have gotten a lot of good reviews.

    Ibanez AS73 - €339 from Thomann.de :)

Of course there are other semi's out there but I'm not gonna post them all here. :D

As for amps, the Roland Microcube gets a lot of love 'round here. I have one too, great little amp! :D

Electro-acoustic guitars are basically acoustic guitars with pickup(s) and a preamp. I don't know much about acoustics so hopefully someone here will post some recommendations. :)

    thanks but now im confused!

whats the difference between a semi-acoustic and an electric-acoustic?

basically in looking to play an acoustic guitar that can be linked to an amp also so it can play electric.

Then you want an electro-acoustic. :)

From your post it sounds like you want one of these:

If this is the case, then maybe some people here can help with recommending some good brands for the money.

yeah thanks that looks like it. so whats the difference between a semi and an electro acoustic?

i shud change the name of the thread to 'starting electro-acoustic'!

I posted a pic of an electro-acoustic. Joe Robot posted a pic of a semi-acoustic, which is an electric guitar with holes in it, for lack of a decent description.
The two wikipedia links I posted should help explain the differences a little better.

I like that, Tanglewood are a pretty good make especially that model.
I think i'm getting a semi looking at that.

    thanks for all the help.

i presume that u can get effects that work with these guitars?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 586 ✭✭✭The_g-man

The amp has chorus and reverb built in. This would be a good start, as acoustic guitars in general would use very few effects compared to electric guitars.
