Question: SKY/Telephone line

Hi, I'm going to cancel my telephone line and switch to a wireless ISP. Will Sky cut me off because I don't have a working phone line? I remember there being a clause in there somewhere. Can they legally do this? Will they automatically know if the line is cut?

Thanks for any info you can provide.

They only look for the phone line if you have multiroom

I do, that's the problem. And they insist on it whether you want multiroom or not, which is strange.

While they may insist on a phoneline regardless if you've Multiroom or not, it's only Multiroom where they are strict on lines being connected.

What ISP do you intend signing up to? For example, I think Digiweb Metro and the ATA they use supports Sky boxes (Watty would know more about how this works/doesn't work).

Irish Broadband Wireless---as in no phone line. We don't use the phone so no more line rental.

When did Irish Broadband start doing a wireless phone service? News to me.

3rd party VOIP like Bluevace etc is very hit & miss with Sky box because the 3rd Party can't implement QOS on the ISP's network and across INEX etc.

With a phone service with real PSTN gateways direct to eircom implemented by your own ISP you have some chance of Fax & Modem and Digibox working. The Digiweb Metro network part of phone interface is on a Digiweb private network and the IP can't be accessed by users or Internet for security. This allows it also to have QOS (unaffected by your upload/download, it has precedence).

Digiweb do other Wireless systems and DSL too. Only the Metro has the required QOS support.

If you Dont HAVE to have a phone line do you have to pay 37.50? that Ive seen on here?
If so what justifies paying 37.50 if you dont actually need a phone line anyway? Is this spoof charging?

It's not a wireless phone service---it's wireless internet. A receiver strapped to a chimney feeds the signal through to a router, which then disperses the signal house-wide via WiFi (which, thanks to my MiMo router and IBB's synchronous 2mb line, should provide a very decent signal for everyday use)

Then it is likely you are being charged full price for multiroom

Is there different price for multiroom then? Im about to dump tv with ntl as im fed up of paying for tv that i can get free via satellite (BBC, ITV, SKY News etc) I was thinking of taking the basic lineup so i can still get Skyone etc? Perhaps im better off staying with ntl then?

Multi room from sky is charged at 15 euro per month (+ your main sub) if both boxes are connected to the same working tel line, otherwise you pay full sub on both boxes

    No. 68 euro a month.

Cheers Tony, I didnt realise this, I just thought it was €15 a month for up to 4 extra boxes plus the full sub. The ntl option is much cheaper for a few of the pay channels that i sometimes watch. Shame no itv 2, 3, 4 etc on ntl as i have to have a ntl digital box and a satellite Fta box in all rooms for complete viewing satisfaction!

Video senders are crap in my house, to many microwaves around.

I hope it stays like that for you, may I ask how long you have had sky multiroom and do you have the same channels on both boxes?

It may well be 15 for multiple boxes in addition to the main box as i'm not fully up to date with the latest multiroom offers so you should check this out with sky.
